Well…as winter kept pushing out, my buddy and I had to make the decision in March when to chase turkeys. We decided the second weekend should allow for more snow melt (we hunt northern MN) and better weather.

Well, we couldn’t have been more wrong! Turkey opener saw 70’s and 80’s…and the third weekend is looking dry and mid 50’s. The second weekend…snow, rain, wind and freezing ass temps. What the helz??? Lol.

If you remember, we shot a nice Tom during last years blizzard but I was really hoping for nicer temps.

Heading up north soon. Gonna drop some locator calls this evening…then go sit my azz in some cold snowy helz.

My brother shot a 22 lb Tom last week on the second day. Called it in to 30 yds. Had shoulder surgery a couple months ago, so shot it left handed.

I got blanked 1st season.  Had one at less than 20 yards away, but there was a deadfall between me and him.  If he'd a walked 10 more feet, I'd a had 'em.  Next day I coulda shot a flock of jakes, but I heard some more toms back in the woods and decided to wait.  The toms went the other way.  Packed out in a thunderstorm and was home before the cold and snow hit.

Hope you’re right Steve…

So far we saw 3 hens and a large flock of mixed birds while driving around. This morning is the first time I heard a gobble. 28 degrees and windy but I’m not giving up. My buddy left this morning due to the weather…now I really need to get one to run it in.

If the sun comes out and starts melting that stuff they’ll be in the fields drying themselves out!

Wish I had access to fields. Hunting big woods up north. I did find some tracks that I believe were from the Tom I heard this morning. I got a game plan for tomorrow should he roost in the same area. I was about 300 yards from him. Gonna try to close that gap…but hopefully I get one yet today!

The adventure continues…

I was walking down a logging road “admiring” all the fresh wolf tracks when out of no where, I come face to face with a Timberwolf!  There was a bend in the road and we were 20 yards away from each other, both craping ourselves im sure. Needless to say, I went a different direction.

Glenn, yes- you can hunt til sunset.

FML. The drama continues…I got f&@king stuck! The truck slide off the logging trail. I’m 30 miles from the cabin. 2 hrs of digging and I’m in an even deeper hole.  I have a cabin neighbor coming to rescue. I just want to throw in the towel. LMAO.

I was able to make it back to the cabin before fertilizing the forest. There may or may not have been a few beer in the cooler while pulling out the truck. There was definitely beers in the cooler when I got back to the cabin!!!

On a slightly positive note…I got stopped by the DNR today. And let me tell you, break every law you can in Aitkin county because, my gawd, the lady was gorgeous! Best CO I’ve ever seen in my life and extremely friendly. She didn’t want to go out for drinks but holy hell, total smoke show.

Anyways, I’m give it another run tomorrow morning. I think I’m closing in on the roost.

I think I deserve hunter of the year award…after all my trials these past 4 days, it’s only right to end this hunt in happy note…

Well that ain’t gonna happen. Around 9am, I finally had a not one gobble, but two! Both coming from different ridges. I hid behind a nice fallen down tree and began the game of cat and mouse. I had one Tom respond to ever call and was making his way towards me so I set up in that direction. Well, out of nowhere, the second Tom, along with 3 jakes, reared in hard from my right. At that time, the big Tom I was calling pulled away and fled out of gun range. Must have saw some movement. Out of position, I move to take aim at the group coming in. Thought I had a solid shot but…missed!  37 yards.

I must be getting old. First time I missed deer in ages was this past season and now a turkey.  Best thing is I got it all on film!  LMAO.

1 hour left…there’s still time to miss another one.

Bagged me a 9-3/4 bearded Tom this morning!

Got out before sunrise. First cluck of the call I had a Tom respond. Talked back and forth for a while before he started to walk away…so naturally I followed. This went on for about 1/4 mile but was always behind him. I finally decided to sprint way up the trail another 1/4 mile and cut him off. Once I got ahead of him, he slowly came in and came right at me!
