Who uses stinger hooks and how many of you have no idea of what a stinger hook is?

A stinger hook is used with any type of bait, but most often a crawler, minnow or leech. Have you ever missed a bunch of bites and checked your bait to see that the end of your bait was bitten clean off.

This is where a stinger hook can save your day. the hook is used as a secondary hook and attached by a tiny rubber ring to your first hook, the stinger is then hooked into your bait. Now that you have a 2nd hook attached, them light biting or smart Walleyes will hook themselves more often.

Pat, I've used stinger hooks in the past, but just on minnows

But, I guess I never thought about using them on crawlers and leeches.

Crawlers, I just use a 3 hook harness,.......but, leeches? .......just never thought of it.

Yep, minnows too. The point i was making was to explain what a stinger hook is and how it is used, i guess I really wasn't paying attention to detail.

So many people have no idea as to what a stinger hook is or that they even exist, my goal was to get the conversation started and each of us can give some feedback. There is no right or wrong on how to use them it's just another weapon in the tackle bag.

Thanks for jumping in and sharing how you use them.  :happy1:

Well, I typically use a stinger with a jig.
And like ya said, when the bite is really light, and they're taking your minnows by the tail, I'll stick one on. Hooking the stinger just behind the dorsal fin.

How do ya rig a leech with a stinger?
I usually (now this is just me) use a smaller leech if they are stripping the bigger ones off.

Just ask'en

if you want to avoid the tight little ball of leech, string, and hooks when you stinger a leech try stapling the leech to a popsicle stick that way it won't be able to tangle anything up.

Ken you got me. I'm not sure if you're joking or not. I'd love to see the construction drawings on that one.

With regard to the stingers hooks they seem to work about the same whether they are spiked into the back of the bait or just allowed to hang free. More often than not I let them hang free.

A couple years ago a friend was telling me about a friend of his who was on a guided trip with "The Griz". This was on the St. Croix. He said The Griz alway fished with a stinger and typically did not hook it to the bait.

There are different types of stinger hooks-different ways to implement a stinger hook.  Here are some examples:

Dont forget about the stinger hooks that are placed on the back of Spinnerbaits,  If your getting good sharp hits but no hook ups, first thing is to bend the blade arm closer to the hook (fish are usually aiming for the blade) so the blade is almost touching the hook, if that doesn't do it--then place a stinger over the rear hook and place a twister tail of some kind on it just for good measure, good luck
