1st Fall Turkey hunt = Tom / Jake

My Dad and I headed out to the woods this morning for our first ever Fall Turkey opener together. I had been out alone for the 09 Spring Turkey hunt and had called in 3 Toms several times during the week but was not able to get a shot off.

This hunt would turn out to be much different; Around 830am as we sat listening to the rain drops hitting the roof of our Doghouse blind and the ground around us, we spotted several turkey coming through the woods directly towards where we were set up. As we watched, we counted 12 heads wandering through the heavy brush and there were several more straggling about another 75 yards behind them.

As we watched them walk to within 15-20 yards of our blind, I told my Dad to pick out the one he wanted to shoot and we will try to wait til they are both in a clear shooting lane and I will count 1-2-3...Fire ON 3. As we waited patiently, I picked out the lone Tom in the group and my Dad drew down on the largest Jake. Dad said he was ready so I started counting, 1....2.....3 Ka blam....the Tom and Jake fell within a yard of each other and our first turkey hunt was a success and a great memory for the future. Nothing better than shooting your first Tom simultaneously while your Dad shoots his first turkey also. Great memories!

Thanks guys, we had a blast and now my Dad is just as hooked as I was after the Spring hunt if not more.

Now that you have been able to bag a fall bird I can say you guys are veteran seasoned Turkey hunters. Great job. Few people can pull off an outstanding feat like that. I am however skeptical of the photo claiming to be 1 1/4 " spurs. You are not supposed to start the measurement from the opposite side of the leg. I hope you are right and the photo is decieving.

Thanks Ken. Your post prompted me to grab the legs and remeasure the spurs, and I stand corrected the spurs were 7/8" and 3/4". I don't know where I got the 1 1/4" original measurement from that I posted, but it was not accurate. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. It will definitely be a hunt that Dad and I will not soon forget, that's for sure. Stay safe in the woods.

These are our first turkeys harvested. We cut out the breast meat and legs to marinade and throw on the grill and I saved the tail fan to dry out and mount along with the legs (w/spurs). I am kicking myself tonight for forgetting to cut off the beard before we disposed of the carcasses as I wanted to mount that along with the fan and spurs.
