(Released July 19, 2010)

“This is a great opportunity for people to get away for the weekend and learn new skills,” said Eric Pelto, DNR special projects coordinator. “Not often can families learn to camp and rock climb in one day.”

The free introduction to rock climbing activity will be hosted by Outdoors EXTRA! from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. No registration is necessary, all equipment is provided, and participants can stop by anytime. I Can Camp! will offer a 24-hour camping workshop, with an afternoon break so families can try out the rock climbing activity.

The Outdoors EXTRA! program series includes everything from rock climbing and sea kayaking to live music and animals. Presenters include many well-known entertainers, musicians, storytellers and outdoor skill-building experts. These programs are open to all ages and skill levels. All events are free with a Minnesota state parks permit, which cost $5 for a day pass and $25 for an annual permit.

I Can Camp! workshop families will spend 24 hours at the park, with assistance from experienced instructors. Registration is $55 for up to six people to learn how to cook outdoors, to set up a tent and to build a campfire. Because most workshop equipment is provided, participants only need to bring personal items, bedding or sleeping bags and food.

Blue Mounds State Park, located in southwestern Minnesota, is known for its Sioux quartzite cliff and roaming buffalo herd. For more information about the park or DNR State Parks and Trails special programs, call the DNR Information Center at 651-296-6157 or toll-free 888-646-6367.
