I'm thinking about a trip to lake of the woods and have never been there. I know the fish bite is mostly during the day from what I understand. I want to find some eyes, perch and tip up some northerns.  Thinking bout staying in a room some where at night and renting a fishouse during the day. If any one has any ideas as far as where to fish or good places to stay or rent houses from I would like to here from you thanks, you can pm  if you prefer.

I have never tried LOW.  I too hope to give it a try this winter.  When I get ready to go I am going to check with Border View Lodge.  They have supplied very consistant fishing reports in the Lake of the Woods forum.  I do know that the water is tannic(dark) so the night bite is slower than the day bite.  If you get up there send us a report.  Good luck.

We pull our wheelers up there every New Years eve. Wheelers point or Zipple bay. The fish like gold. We also try to make it to URL or Winne a couple times. It's about a 260 mile drive one way.

just about anywhere you will service you properly;as far as accomidations there is a lot to choose from I like Bay View and they take good care of you on the lake,Sportsman is good but spendy they take real good care of you,you can stay at a hotel/ motel and rent a house  per day from any resort on the lake or fish portables, most years you need an extension on your auger;zipple bay is another good place to stay and as far as houses they are decent a bit cheaper and you drive your own vehicle on the ice accept during first ice....rest assured no matter what you choose they have houses on the ice right now. Try the Baudette motel for decent accomidations and john cook at river veiw lodge. or ryan and randi donat @ bayview.
I lived up there for ove 10 years.

Some of the feedback I have received is that glow red is another good go to color.

I was up there in the beginning of March last year and we hammered the fish on plain red hooks. That's about all that was working for us.

hey there again; you know just about any color works on LOW gold is awesome now and anything with glo, funny thing is years ago I'd fish gull rock area exclusivly with 3/8 ounce jigs and live silver shinners from rainy river, and a huge bobber; then I started fishing with friends and such they all told me I was doing it wrong even though I was still catching nice numbers.I find that black and white or bonnie blue and white or chartrusse and blaze orange and redand white and of course all of these variations with thier glo mixes,I suggest zipple bay for the first part of the ice season then moving to 4 mile bay and gap areas or the extreme other side by warroad whiskey flats, dnr reef,5 mile reef, and for sure 16 mile reefand of course rainy river in the birchdale area look up the nelson store in birchdale and they can hook you up with a room and some good guide spots.I tend to fish heavier jigs on the river. and you have to have the heavy weights now and again to beat the current.and I also find on the river that frozen river shinners salted work real wel; the salt dries them a tad while the freeze it makes them a bit easier to thaw and makes them a litle more tough so the don't come off the jig so easy.Oh and no matter how you fish here do not ever never ever long line on LOW or RR seriously a small set  will get you further and kill less fish.another good place to stay is in clementson they have cabins and rentals on the ice
