DNR announces appointment of new Walker Area Fisheries supervisor

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced the appointment of Doug Schultz as the new area fisheries supervisor for the Walker Fisheries Management Area.

He replaces Harlan Fierstine who retired last December.

“We’re excited to have Doug on board as the Walker Area Fisheries supervisor,” said Henry Drewes, northwest region fisheries manager. “He’s been a great asset to the Leech Lake walleye management effort and I’m confident he’ll continue his great work as area supervisor.”

Schultz has been the DNR large lake specialist for Leech Lake in Walker since 2007. He played a key role in updating the lake’s management plan, evaluating special harvest regulations and assessing the potential impact of double crested cormorant predation on the walleye and yellow perch populations.

“I look forward to addressing key management questions and concerns collaboratively with our citizens,” said Schultz. “I want to continue providing the quality angling opportunities for which this area is renowned.”

Prior to moving to Walker, Schultz worked out of the Lanesboro Fisheries Management Area where he was responsible for the design and development of a comprehensive long-term monitoring program for coldwater streams in southeast Minnesota. Schultz joined the DNR in 2006.

Schultz is a Minnesota native who earned a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from South Dakota State University and a master’s degree in Zoology from Southern Illinois University.
