New camper cabins offer a warm way to enjoy winter at Lake Shetek State Park

When planning a family getaway this winter, consider Lake Shetek State Park.  It can be a warm and cozy experience with three new heated camper cabins.
“Winter is a beautiful time to enjoy the park, with or without snow,” according to Chris Ingebretsen, assistant park manager.  “It’s quiet and peaceful here.  Park traffic is light.  It’s a great time to connect with the outdoors.”

Camper cabins are rustic, one-room wooden cabins that rent for $50 a night and provide basic shelter for visitors with convenient access to the park’s scenic hike, snowshoe and snowmobile opportunities.  Each 12 by 16 foot cabin is heated, has electricity and contains a table, benches, and wooden bunk beds with mattresses.  Up to five or six people can sleep in each cabin.  Cabins do not have indoor plumbing, but vault toilets are nearby and drinking water is available.

Ingebretsen said a wide variety of visitors are using the cabins including young families, elderly couples and travelers.  He added that two of the three new cabins are also ADA accessible.

The three new cabins at Lake Shetek State Park were among 12 constructed in state parks across Minnesota last year with funds appropriated to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources from the Parks and Trails portion of Minnesota’s Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment, as approved by the state Legislature.

Cabins can be reserved by calling Lake Shetek State Park at 507-763-3256.  Beginning March 1, visitors will be able to reserve a cabin online.

Lake Shetek State Park sits on more than 1,100 acres and features 12 miles of hiking trails, including six miles of paved trails for bikes.  Snowshoe rentals are available through the winter.

The park is located north of Currie on County Road 38.  It 14 miles northeast of Slayton, 13 miles south of Tracy, and 33 miles southeast of Marshall.
