OK so i'm not a big believer in  thatching my lawn. i believe the dead grass serves 2 purposes.............fertilizer for the lawn and it helps keep the ground with moisture a little longer.

i cant afford the cities water to water the lawn.  i havent thatched it in roughly 10 years but thinking of maybe doing it this spring when the time is right,

so wit that being said................thoughts, comments, opinions????????????????

Some will de-thatch theirs twice a year, Spring & Fall. In general, it helps the healthy grass get healthier, which usually means you can cut back on fertilizer & herbicide. Aerating really helps too, it gets some moisture & sun down to those roots. You can always mow/mulch the thatch so it gets worked back into the soil faster. When the weather turns hot & dry I raise the cut of the mower a notch. They're both a little more work but IMO are better than the alternatives. I spent 10+ seasons on the local golf course & ran a lawn care/ snow removal business for another 2-3 years

I never thatch my lawn any more. Always afraid I'd be pulling out some of the green stuff especially in da spring when ground is extra moist. Had the lawn aeriated by the lawn service in da fall once. It rained soon after and all the little dirt plugs turned to mud pellets. Then when I'd go to rake da leaves I'd step on da dirt plugs and they smashed into da lawn. What a mess. never again. I've been using a mulching lawnmower for years now and it sure saves on emptying da bag all day. The mulch is supposed to feed da lawn. Sometimes I wonder if it could add to da thatch.

I live in the country and mow 2 plus acres.  I never thatch and can't wait for the lawn to turn brown so I don't have to mow.  Least year with all the rain the brown happiness never came.
