Mark got up at 4:45 AM on Monday (he stayed in the camper) and went to a blind about 100 yards away.  He heard a few birds gobbling to the north, but none came in to his calls.  Because he didn't sleep well Sunday night (plus there's the aforementioned 4:45 AM wakeup) he headed to the camper to take a nap around 9AM.  Just in case, he stuck a decoy about 15 yards out the camper door. He turned on the radio, took off his hunting duds and laid down. After an hour he was awaken by a racket out side and when he looked out the window he saw a tom trying to have his way with the decoy! You can guess the rest but it was sure funny.  Probably the only guy around to shoot on in their underwear.

How do you cook them DE.  I have never actually heard anyone say anything about how good a turkey tastes.  I'm wondering how to cook them if I go next year.

Those toms are sneaky buggers.  You never know when or where they are going to show up.

Here is what I've done.

I oven roasted the first one whole... meh.
I ground the breast meat on the second one and made chili...  it was OK.
I smommed the breast meat from the third...  that was the ticket!

I think I will marinade the next one and wrap it in bacon before I smoke it.

I agree with Steve-o,  Oven baking can be iffy.  They are ok if you put them in a bag with apples potatoes and celery but don't over cook.   I've heard good things about smoked wild turkey.

We put ours is the slow cooker with chicken stock. Make smashed taters, pull the 🦃 meat apart, put it on the taters, and cover with gravy.  :chef:

After a meal of oven roasted turkey, we usually do the same.  Slice is thin and put it in the crock pot with sauce.

You probably heard the saying "He's a tough old bird".  Well, that probably got started when the first cooked wild turkeys.   :rotflmao:
