so i've been watching the temps for opening of rifle season.....and it dont look good for dealing with the deer after its harvested. add in the fact that if our group gets a deer the first weekend we need take it in for the CWD  :bs:. it doesnt get below freezing until the thursday after opener. whats everyone thoughts, plans????

i'm pretty certain i will be getting it out of the woods as soon as its legal to run an ATV, get it registered, do the CWD thing, and skin, 1/4 and put in a frig. we are fortunate enough to have 2 spare frigs in our sheds!!!!!

whats everyone elses game plan!!!!!!!!

I've wrapped deer up in a tarp with a block of ice when there were no other options.

One year I shot an old, old doe in warm weather.  We had the luxury of taking it back to a lake hope and skinned it that afternoon.  I'm glad we did because that deer had over an inch of fat covering her entire back hind quarters and the fat was already starting to get hot.  Getting all that fat cut off and exposing the carcass to the cold overnight air helped save the meat.

Yep, what Boar said. Cool temps over night will get them cool down and the warmth of the daytime is not long enough to warm them back up. Do get it hung and skun as soon as possible though.

Yeah, the problem with my suggestion (ice+tarp) is that you don't want to keep the meat wet.  Moisture is the other component that goes along with warmth for growing bacteria.  :doah:  You want that carcass to dry out fast too.

we have had other years like this, did the ice inside thing........i didnt like it and didnt work well. i ended up throwing meat away.

so, if your going to skin it, why not just 1/4 it and throw them in the frig right away???? we have the frig's to do it.

Se hunt in the CWD zone so have no choice-we have to quarter it out and get all the trim off the skeleton before leaving the woods.

We always skin ours right away no matter what. Cools the meat down quicker and we think(and others I know) helps remove the gamey taste from the meat. Letting them hand just seems to tenderize the meat even more. Some of the tastiest venny I even ever had was about five years ago and it was warm all the way until thanksgiving. The deer hung in the garage for 2 weeks. Mold was starting grow where I split the pelvic. That was some of the most tender venny ever. Almost like dry aging it. But like Boar says, you need to do waht you are comfortable with. Good luck.

the problem with us where we are at JB is we are 3 1/2 hours away from home. to skin it right away leaves it open to more dirt etc during transport.

i'm not disagreeing with  you, and if we get a deer the first weekend i will be up there the full week, i'll have it all butcheed before i go home either way!!!!!

to GG's post, regarding having to have it skinned and quartered before leaving the woods,   i dont recall reading that?????? i new if you transported it across state lines you had to have it trimmed??????????

Brand new member here. My son arrowed a buck firearms opener last year when it climbed to more than 70 that Saturday. He shot it in the morning and we waited a good hour to track it because we weren't certain of the shot. Turns out we could have went right away to get it probably. But we didn't get it hung up and skinned for another couple of hours. Once we did though, we went to work, quickly quartering it and getting it into a 100 quart cooler with frozen milk jugs. Then we got all the rib trimmings and neck meat off -and anywhere else we could find meat and into another cooler. We cut everything up the next day after it had all cooled down nicely. Anyway, required some strategy but taught me not to be afraid to hunt early archery either if the temps are high.
