Thoughts on immigration from a teacher's husband
Subject: Something you won't read about in the papers during the
      immigration debate

As you all listen to the news about the student protests over illegal
immigration there are some things that you should be aware of.

My wife is in charge of the English-as-a-second-language department
at large southern California high school which is designated a Title
1 school, meaning that its students average lower socio-economic and
income levels. Most of the schools you are hearing about South Gate
High, Bell Gardens, Huntington Park, etc., where these students are
protesting are also Title 1 schools.

My wife tells me that 100% of the students in her school and other
Title 1 schools are on the free breakfast, free lunch program. When I
say free breakfast I' m not talking a glass of milk and roll... but a
full breakfast and cereal bar with fruits and juices that would make
a Marriott proud. The waste of this food is monumental, with trays
and trays of it being dumped in the trash uneaten. She estimates that
well over 50% of these students are obese or at least moderately
overweight. About 75% or more DO have cell phones.

The school also provides day care centers for the unwed teenage
pregnant girls (some as young as 13) so they can attend class without
the inconvenience of having to arrange for babysitters or having
      family watch their kids.

She was ordered to spend $700,000 on her department or risk losing
funding for the upcoming year even though there was little need for
anything; her budget was already substantial. She ended up buying new
computers for their computer learning center. Half of which, one
month later, have been carved with graffiti by the appreciative
students who obviously feel humbled and grateful to have a free
      education in America.

She has had to intervene several times for young and substitute
teachers whose classes consist of many illegal immigrant students
here in the country less then 3 months who raised so much hell with
the female teachers, calling them "Putas"--whores--and throwing
things that the teachers were in tears.
Free medical, free education, free food, day care etc.. etc.. etc..
Is it any wonder they feel entitled to not only be in this country
but to demand rights, privileges and entitlements?

To my bleeding-heart liberal friends who want to point out how much
these illegal immigrants contribute to our society because they LIKE
their gardener and housekeeper and they like to pay less for
tomatoes: spend some time in the real world of illegal immigration
and see the TRUE costs. Higher insurance, medical facilities closing,
higher medical , more crime , lower standards of education in our
schools , overcrowding, new diseases etc.. etc.. etc.. For me --- I
      'll pay more for tomatoes.

We need to wake up. The guest worker program will be a disaster
because we won't have the guts to enforce it. Does anyone in their
right mind really think they will leave and return voluntarily?

There are many hardworking Hispanic/American citizens that contribute
to our country and many that I consider my true friends. We should
encourage and accept those Hispanics who have done it the right and
legal way. It does, however, have everything to do with culture. A
third-world culture that does not value education, that accepts
children getting pregnant and dropping out of school by 15 and that
refuses to assimilate... and an American culture that has become so
weak and politically correct that we don't have the will to do
      anything about it.

We need illegal immigrants?!  What else do we need?  Drug dealers because they stimulate the economy?  If we need them should we just open the borders to ANYONE & EVERYONE who wants to come here?  Why have borders?  Why limit how many come here if we need them?  Nutty.  Those jobs that no American would do used to actually be done by Americans before the ILLEGALS came into this country in droves.  Who do you think built the homes in America 30, 40, 50 years ago.  Possibly an illegal, but almost assuredly it was an American or a legal immigrant.  Who do you think made your burger at McDonald's in the '60s & '70s?  Same story.  Same with every other job in this country.  Don't want to sound aggressive, but I'm not sure who has done their homework.  Illegals are filling our prisons, committing many crimes, and stressing our hospitals.  More illegals needed?  Don't think so.

Until our high school students can properly use "their" vs "they're" vs "there" and also "then" vs "than", they should be in HIGH SCHOOL classes learning ENGLISH.  :cowboy:

Once they've accomplished that, they should then, and only then, have Spanish (or any foreign language) available as an elective.   :euro:
Plus the foreign language classes should be being taken for college credits; not as a requirement for high school graduation.

Guy, I appreciate your points and attacks.  When did I say we didn't need low wage workers?  You ignored the whole point of my rational.  Americans used to do those low wage jobs.  Americans.  Legal residents of this country (including immigrants who did the right thing and followed the laws of this country to become residents).  Plus, roofers, siders, etc. are far from low wage jobs.  Lower wage than a legal American would ask for probably, but not low wage jobs by most standards.  If low wage illegals were good for a country, Europe and weathier countries worldwide would be actively seeking out and paying to transport these folks in.  Why wouldn't Kuwait, Germany, Canada, etc. be putting ads in the papers down in Mexico and South America in general asking to ship these low wage workers in?  Africa and parts of Asia could also provide a wealth of low wage earners.  So Guy, not sure what you do for a living, but if you owned a business, would you illegally hire an illegal alien?

My only gripe is...they need to sign the "guestbook" upon entering the US!  That's all I ask!  Is that too much? I think not!  All of our forefathers had to become a citizen, why should things change now?

Unless I misunderstood something in high school civics class-when you become a citizen, then, and ONLY THEN, do you have certain inaliable rights.

Amen Woody.  Immigrants have a place in America, just not illegal immigrants.  It amazes me how many Americans think illegals are good for our country.  What other illegal activities should be allowed and embraced?

spell check is still down :(

Here's some questions I pose-

When an illegal immigrant commits a serious crime such as Murder, rape, theft/robbery etc., what do you suppose happens to them?

My father in law works at Swift (the one in Worthington-one of the places that they had the raid)  He is forced to do jobs that used to be "newbie" jobs.  He's been there 20 yrs or so, but the illegals he works next to just say "Me no espeaka english" and they get by doing 1/2 the job they should be doing.  And it's not just an isolated incident, it's that way throughout the plant!  How do I know, I have other inlaws that work in other departments there-same story.  Oh and even though a bunch got shipped back across the "line", many are back again, under different names.    So my question regarding this is....

Tell me again how this is ok (put yourself in his shoes).

I'm not trying to pick a fight, just trying to get my point across.  I can appreciate all sides of the arguement, but it still boils down to one thing in my mind-sign the "Guestbook"!!  I think the US should look at Denmarks immigration policy and use portions of it in our own revised immigration policy!

Again, I don't want to be a dick (yes, I have to a point), but Guy, to have a debate, you have to address issues raised, not just comment.  Debate includes making and responding to points.  Without that it is simply a monologue.

P.S.  It doesn't sound like you're aware this took place a year ago and yes, there were no arrests.

This thread is a real turn off for me, its not something that i want to see popping up on our main page every few minutes.

I'm here to talk about hunting, fishing and other outdoors activities, not for this crap.

At one time this thread could of been very informative, now it looks like a debate between 2 of our members, lets drop this and find something better to do.
