FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Diamond Lake in Cass County to be opened to liberalized fishing Oct. 1-19 (September 30, 2008)

Diamond Lake in Cass County will be opened to liberalized fishing Oct. 1-19 prior to the application of rotenone, a broad-spectrum pesticide/piscicide, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The lake has been managed for rainbow trout since 1967. Due to current high populations of undesirable fish species, which compete with rainbow trout for food, the lake will be reclaimed to rid the lake of all fish. The lake will then be repopulated with trout.

In May, the DNR plans to stock 7,000 rainbow trout yearlings, 9-11 inches long, to provide angling opportunity for the 2009 season. Annual stocking of 14,000 fall fingerling rainbow trout will begin in October 2009.

DNR rules for taking fish during liberalized fishing:

Diamond lake will be open to liberalized fishing from Oct. 1-19, 2008, only
signs will be posted during that time
a resident angling license is required
fish may be taken in any quantity for personal use
rough fish may be sold
fish may be taken by spear, gillnet, or angling
the use of seines, hoop nets, fyke nets or explosives to take fish is strictly prohibited
private land must be respected when accessing the lake; trespass laws will be enforced
trash and litter must be carried out
all fish caught must be taken home
the trout stamp requirement is being waived during the liberalized season.
