Tomorrow is D-Day......well not really, but it is opener duck hunting!   :woot:

I thought I'd open a thread to post some pics of your success. So if you get some or just want to post a story here....that way we all can enjoy each others hitts....and, or near misses....

The "boy" and me are going to be hunting our pond on the property and the ajoining creek.
If he can hit a few, I'll post them here!

Good luck to everyone!

Jr. and I spent a few hours at our favorite spot. The 2 Woodies were in the bag at 9:08 but he was having a good time tossing rocks and sticks in the water. Chasing frogs and every other thing little boys like to do. About 11:00 he was ready to go home soaked of course!!!

Let’s go back about 7 years to 2001. That was the one year that I actually did go duck hunting and I honestly had one of the best times ever.

We were up in Nevis, Mn on Deer Lake. My uncle had a cabin up there and we hunted in the swamp right out in front of the cabin. The evening before we were to hunt we watched duck after duck after flock after flock fly into that swamp. That little pot hole was filling up. The anticipation for morning was building! The morning came quick and we set out in our 14 foot aluminum Lund with our shotguns, coffee and decoys. It didn’t take long and we had our spread out and we were tucked back in the cattails. As we sat there in the dark we could hear the ducks squawking and quacking back in the swamp. As sunrise neared they got louder. I was with my uncle warren and my grandpa Filiowich who was a life long duck hunter. He knew the ducks so well that by the sound they made he could identify them. He’d say “listen over there, that’s a mallard, and that there is a wood duck.”  By the time it was light I was almost an expert myself.

I think one of the best parts of that whole experience was sitting in that blind having a cup of coffee listening to my grandpa whisper stories about the good ’ol days. It makes me wonder if these days will be the good ‘ol day when we are old and out with the grandkids.

The sun finally did come and with it came the ducks. A small group of wood ducks had lifted out of the pothole and without hesitation we fired a couple shots at them and then it started. They exploded! There were ducks piling out of there. The sky was dark and I was shooting like a mad man. Ducks were falling everywhere and before we knew it we had dropped our limit. Luckily we did because by the time we were done the ducks were gone!

It took sometime to retrieve all of our ducks but we filled and called it a day.

Unfouratnelty I have never been out again and neither has my grandpa but what a great day it was. Someday I’ll be back and someday I’ll be telling that story to my grandkids in the dark over a cup of coffee but I think I might spruce it up a bit for them.

A lot of good memories are made in the swamp and in the field and that is I think why we keep going back. Like I mentioned last week, it’s not the limits but the stories of the hunt and the people that you share these experiences with that complete the time out there. I hope everyone had a successful and safe waterfowl

Tim, what are ya waitin' for?  Get back out there!

Weather was nice for an opener.  Saw alot of ducks and shot some.  Had a good time, and it was so nice to get back out to the shack.
