Just a heads up...............

Turkey hunters have until Jan. 9 to apply for the 2009 spring hunt, wherever hunting and fishing licenses are sold.

Does any of your local ELS people even have any info on it? In the Brainerd area, neither Gander or Fleet Farm have any info on it. Fleet will let you apply though.

I registered for my first Turkey license lottery last week. Hopefully I will get drawn and can broaden my hunting experiences to include some wild turkey this coming spring!   :woot:

Ya know what kinda chaps my ------
We pay $5 as part of our turkey hunting license for the "turkey stamp fee"; HOWEVER, if you actually want the stamp, you have to pay another $2 !!!!!
I know it's only $2 but it's just another way they get us!
Just needed to vent!

While I understand that it seems lie th DNR wants to nickel and dime us, I can see both sides of the issue.  I have spent a lot of time volunteering with the DNR as Smokey the Bear at the State Fair, a Firearms safety instructor, etc. I have seen the effects of the budget cuts that have taken place.  Due to the way gas prices were, CO's were limited in the number of miles they could drive, cutting thier range, programs were either reduced or cut, stocking programs were cut, etc.  I have no problems paying a little extra to help them out.  There is a VOLUNTARY walleye stamp that you can purchase for $5 that helps stocking efforts.  I am willing to be one that will Volunteer to pay that money.  The DNR has a tight budget, and is under funded.  While money is tight in my family as well, I have no problems helping out an organization that does so much for us with so little and doesn't ask for much recognition.

I understand what you're saying, and I guess my gripe isn't with paying $5 for the stamp, but having to pay EXTRA if I do want the physical stamp.  Someone spent the time designing the stamp; and it's kind of nice to see it on my license.

and I get that.  My way of thinking about it is that extra $2 is gong to an ageny tat is understaffed, underfunded, and over worked.  Each DNR Conservation Officer has an area of 200-500 Square miles.  I, Personally, don't have a problem spending an extra $2 for te actual stamp.  If enough people did it on a regular basis, we could help out in a significant way

Announced is the Turkey Stamp Winner from the DNR:

News Releases
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Richfield resident wins 2010 turkey stamp design contest (January 12, 2009)

A painting of three turkeys near an old barn by Timothy Turenne, Richfield, will be featured on Minnesota’s 2010 Wild Turkey Stamp.

Turenne’s design was chosen from among 10 entries in a contest sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). This is the second turkey stamp contest win for Turenne.

Four entries advanced to the second stage of judging, from which two finalists were selected during the contest conducted Jan. 8 at DNR Headquarters in St. Paul. The second place finalist was Laurence Huls of Avon.

An artist whose work is selected for a Minnesota fish or wildlife stamp receives no  compensation from the DNR but does retain reproduction and marketing rights.

2010 turkey stamp design
The 2010 turkey stamp contest judges were: Eric Linder, National Wild Turkey Federation regional director; Dick Oehlenschlager, curator/collections manager Science Museum of Minnesota; Mike Kurre, DNR mentoring coordinator; Don Dittberner, Outdoor News and Dick Kimmel, DNR farmland research group leader.

The Minnesota Wild Turkey Stamp was authorized by the 1996 Minnesota Legislature at the request of turkey hunters. Stamp revenue is used for wild turkey management and research. Revenues from stamp sales are dedicated to the development, restoration, maintenance and preservation of wild turkey habitat in Minnesota.

The DNR wouldn't be underfunded if the politicians would keep their slimy hands off the money that is dedicated to wildlife and habitat from the license fees and stamp programs. They could also cut back on the lavish parties and shooting at dead sheep to tell us something we already know. All with taxpayer money. Now I agree the DNR has a tough job to do and some what limited resources with which to do it, but some common sense needs to be used on the spending. Believe me not only the DNR has this trouble, but every phase of government from national down to city and school boards.
