Heated camper cabins now open at Afton State Park

Two new camper cabins, heated and wired with electricity, have opened at Afton State Park near a bluff overlooking the St. Croix River.

The White Pine and Bur Oak cabins are located by the park’s group campsite. The new cabins, one of which is accessible, are available year-round at a cost of $50 per night, smoke-free, and sleep up to six people. Two more camper cabins will open in the coming months.

Afton State Park, set in bluff land and a rolling glacial moraine, is an ideal place for visitors to take full advantage of the winter wonderland. Since 1969, the park has provided unique opportunities for nature-oriented recreation. Trails traverse remnant and restored prairies, wind down deep ravines and rise up to ridge tops overlooking the scenic St. Croix River.

There are now 70 camper cabins at 25 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas. The one-room camper cabins provide a basic shelter for visitors who want a “camping out” experience but may not have the necessary equipment for typical camping. The 12-foot by 16-foot wooden cabins contain a table, benches, and wooden bunk-bed frames with mattresses.

Visitors staying at camper cabins need to bring their own sleeping bags or other bedding. They can do their cooking outside at the fire ring, which has a grill, or-in the cabins with electricity, like those at Afton State Park-they can bring a crock pot or coffee maker for use inside. The camper cabins do not have indoor plumbing, but drinking water and vault toilets are open year-round.

Afton State Park is located 20 miles southeast of the Twin Cities metro area on the St. Croix River. Camper cabin reservations can be made up to a year in advance online at stayatmnparks.com or by calling 866-85PARKS (866-857-2757).
