DNR invites public comment on using timber harvest to reach resource management goals at Carley State Park
(Released June 17, 2010)

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Parks and Trails is amending the management plan for Carley State Park, where timber harvest activity is planned as part of resource management projects next year.

An open house will be held on Friday, June 25, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for anyone interested in learning more about the project. The open house will be at the Whitewater State Park office. Whitewater State Park management staff oversees operations at Carley State Park.

Public comments will be accepted through July 30 for the plan amendment, which has been posted on the DNR website at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/input/mgmtplans/parks/index.html.

The DNR uses timber harvesting as a tool to meet its resource management goals and to facilitate interpretive and recreation activities. Timber harvests take place in state parks and state recreation areas primarily to restore or manage native plant communities. In some cases, a harvest is necessary to restore visitor access and safety by clearing trails and reducing the risk of forest fires from downed timber following a storm.

A management plan sets the direction for the state park for the next 15 to 20 years. It includes recommendations for managing natural and cultural resources, and providing recreational and interpretative opportunities for park visitors. The plan amendment will clarify the use of timber harvesting as a resource management tool at this park.
