After successfully putting three guys on turkeys, I decided to give it a go myself.  I invited my brother in law along for his first turkey hunt.  I got up at 3:00 AM and went to his house.  It only takes an hour to get to my land but it gets light by 5:00 AM so we went early.  Between 5:30 and 7:00 there was a virtual wildlife concert.  Sand Hill Crains, Geese, Grouse Drumming, lots of bird singing, and Oh, yes, some gobbling and chirping turkeys.  I used the box call twice after hearing a gobble behind us.  After a while we heard a gobble by my camper. I swear I should just sit in the back of the pickup.  Shortly after that I spotted a turkey head poking out of the grass about 50 yards away.  It was over a rise so I couldn't see the body.  We both got into position to shoot (two guys moving around in the ground blind made quite a ruckus).  I had a jake decoy set out about 22 yards away.  As the first turkey headed for the decoy, we saw the second one a short distance behind.  Soon it was time to execut plan "A".  One, Two, -BOOM, BOOM.  Two turkeys flopping on the ground.  This was both mine and my brother in laws first turkeys.  How cool is that.

Me with our birds.

My brother in law with our birds.

We shot the birds at the narrow spot down the field.

Last week we cooked my son's bird.  My wife just put it in a roaster like any other turkey.  I think she over did it a bit.  The breast meat was ok but the legs and thighs were tough.  She cooked mine today.  She use one of the plastic bags made for turkeys.  Put in some carrots and celery, shut the bag and cooked for 2.5 hours.  It was great.
