I have used a variety of oils for frying over the years. And while looking through the weekly adds to buy some more, I saw cotton seed oil. Have you used it? I never even seen it before....Is there a benefit to using it? Different frying temperature? Different taste? Less fat?

I do know cottonseed oil is loaded with fat, and is rated as one pf the worst oils to eat/consume. Also talk that it may have trace amounts of pesticides in it. I know peanut and coconut oil seem to consistently rate the best. Peanut oil is great for high-temp frying, too. Here's a list of bad oils to use....

These oils are extracted from seeds, and need to go through very harsh processing methods.

They are high in polyunsaturated fats, with a terrible Omega-6:Omega-3 ratio, and up to 4% of the fatty acids in them are toxic trans fats (13).

Not only should you avoid them for deep frying, but you should make an effort to avoid them altogether.

This includes, but is not limited to:

Soybean oil.
Corn oil.
Canola oil (also called rapeseed oil).
Cottonseed oil.
Safflower oil.
Rice bran oil.
Grape seed oil.
Sunflower oil.
Sesame oil.
Using these oils for deep frying is likely to result in large amounts of oxidized fatty acids and harmful compounds (14). Avoid them like the plague.

I have friends that come over for fish fry's that are allergic to peanuts, so I stay away from peanut oil. Coconut oil seems to be the better option then. Thanks for the info!

Thanks, no expert on the oils stuff. Just knew what was good and what wasn't. I wonder how spendy coconut oil is?

Not sure on the cost, we are going into town soon so I will check. The wife said she has only seen coconut oil in "lard" form, so we'll see what we can find.

We had a Cajun restaurant here that just closed...every time I was at Walmart, the owner of the restaurant was coming out of Sam's club every week with many 5 gal jugs of it...

Yup, the stuff is spendy. We bought 2 of these little guys just to try it out.  $6.79 a piece, so a little more than double for regular oil. I got some fresh smelt from the north shore to try it out on!

Let us know how it works out....temp wise, taste, etc. I'm really curious. Is that the consistency of lard or "regular" Crisco?

Jug says that it melts at 75 degrees, and is the consistency of regular Crisco. Lard is more "slimmy", and this is not. I'm curious as well because I'm not a fan of coconut shrimp, so I hope the taste is not overpowering.

Yup, the smelt fry for our area was yesterday before we got back (we go every year). So we figured we would buy some fresh ones up there. Little on the spendy side, but they was already cleaned, just caught the day before, and frozen. Russ had them for $7.50 a pound, and we got 3 pounds.....more than enough for mama and me, with a few left over for the boy.  :happy1:
