Diving ducks, also called sea ducks, are typically birds of large, deep lakes and rivers, coastal bays and inlets. Their speculums lack the brilliance of those on most dabblers.

Most patter along the water in taking wing. They all dive for food, whereas dabblers rarely dive. They also have a more rapid wingbeat than most dabblers.

I thought red heads were dabbling ducks? I've shot them over shallow and deep water so i guess I'm not sure.

Kinda tough an unfair list there. Out of 20 birds shown only 9 use the mississppi an central flyway 2 of then are rarities in Mn.
 If yer a duck hunter you really dont need to ID Scooters or Eiders,oldsquaw an harliquin I can  t see the list while posting so maybe more.NOW a birder should be able to ID all of em.
 I     aint looking on the net for the bird below the spectacled Eider, what is it???

Two ducks I want to add to my collection on the wall is #1 harleguin and #2 old squaw.I have a friend that hunts lake Michigan in lay out boats,he claims they tag old squaw's in water over 150'deep,amazing they dive that deep to feed.
