Fisheries staff recently stocked over 4,300 rainbow trout in Long Lake, near Longville, in NW MN. “Rainbows” hatched Dec 2015 in Lanesboro.

Ya I seen that HD and thanks for posting it.  They also stocked Grindstone this fall along with many other stream trout lakes in northern Minnesota for the winter ice fishing season.  I seen some of the adult rainbows they put in Cenaiko and Grindstone.  Cenaiko is about 10 miles from my house.  I seen a rainbow about 8 pounds or so in shallow water under the ice while fishing on Grindstone.  It came up to my waxie and just played with it at the time.  Great color on that fish   Can't wait to get on the ice Jan 14 to go after some rainbows, browns, and lakers there.  good luck.

Is that the trout pond by the dam along the river?

When I lived in Stillwater I LOVED going to Square Lake to fish for the stocked trout.  I would fish in my portable in the winter and in the shallows I would lay down and look down the hole and would see them swimming by in packs of 4 or 5.  Exciting as heck to see those different type of fish.  Sometimes I would set up in 60 feet too.  Caught fish in both depths.  Even used a downrigger in that small lake and went in circles and caught a 6 lb rainbow in the summer.  I loved doing that.  I have always wanted to go to Grindstone and trout fish.  Someday.  Now that I don't have a 5th wheel I would have to stay at a motel and bring my boat.  OR stay at a motel and bring my hub house to ice fish.  HHMMM... Sounds like fun.  I am going to see how far that is from here.

Yes HD, it's that pond by the river by the dam.  The opener is a zoo there as you might guess.  Some of the guy's there have caught rainbows up to 12 pounds there [all stocked brood fish].  When the DNR is done with them they dump them in a few lakes.  I usually have a Grindstone get together every year.  Last year was the first time I didn't have it.  On opener last year half of the lake was still open.  I have caught brook trout there also.  If you fish there fish shallow.  Like 4 or 5 feet.  Plain hook with a waxie works best  [same with Grindstone a lot of times].

The thing about Grindstone is From January 14 until walleye season closes you can still fish for pike there.  There are monsters in there with wide backs.  Feed on trout and smelt there.  Grindstone is a good choice for rainbows and browns because there is a lot of carry over there unlike the smaller ponds in the cities where everything is caught until the next stocking.  I get some nice 16 to 18 inchers there and they have orange flesh so you know they are feeding naturally over a couple of years.  Last year I caught a 4 pound laker fishing for rainbows in 4 feet of water on a waxie.  5 other lakers swam with this one and two were bigger.  Love that lake.  Check out my site and go to the Where to go page.  You will see my stuff about Grindstone there with some of the fish there and the get together.  good luck.
