looking for suggestion, dog spots, slow grass grow area's etc...what do you guyz use that works? if anything,,,tried our local feedmill for our town's sandy soil grass seed mix, then EZ seed from home depot, even ordered the "lawn mouse" as seen on the tellie couple years ago, hydro seeding farce, sucker here,I hate to admitt it,was thinking of this grass matt I keep seeing advertised at home depot, anything short of laying new sod, right now I have a bumper crop of crab grass I'm trying to slow down the spread, which creates dead spots as well in my yard.

Thanx Gunner, reb's theroy "rake" your yard....hmmmm what does he mean rake?,my tractor mower chews up the leaves come fall, infact my popple tree's already shed leaves, willow tree started last week.,not really a yard guy, don't fertilize either, bare spots are an eye sore if I decide to sell my house one of these days soon and finish my retirement out in south dakota.

One thing I found back when we had dogs and had to seed those spots was to put some crushed lime down with the seed and work into the dirt. Fertilizing the yard is definitely your friend too.

Keep the tips rolling.  I need to do some yard repair this fall.  The drought was especially hard on the south facing lawn and the weeds had a hay day.  I hit them with killer, but there are lots of bare spots where the creeping weeds choked out the sparse lawn that remained.

When the weather cools a bit, I'll clean out the weeds, scratch up the soil as best I can, and over seed; paying attention to keeping it wet thru the fall growing season.

And then I'll over seed again for the spring.  I heard somewhere a guy spread the seed over the snow and it grew pretty well after the snow melted and the ground warmed.  I imagine it worked something like pre-soaking the grass seed before you spread it.

steve-o,I read the same about seeding the snow late spring,I seeded my wildflower snow covered garden one late march day,by gosh it worked, but so did the weed seeds that came off my hunting cloths/dog from previous fall, the nasty spiney burrs that entangle the dog's fur and cling to our pants...they also took hold as well come warm weather, thank goodness for "kills all" yard spray
