Hey everyone,
Well, after 18 years my reliable 8" Husky ice auger died.  Looking for opinions on a new one.  I'm leaning towards a SM Lazer mag, but am concerned about replacing blades ($$$).  I simply had to only take a file to the old chipping blade, and I was ready to go.  Anyway, let me know what you got, what you like, don't like.

I have a Jiffy30 3HP with an 8 inch tip and the blades absolutley rip.  I got this a last year from a buddy whose dad passed away 6 years ago.  It had not been used or summerized once until Spring 2007.  This Machine to 20 minutes to get running First i wiped the dust off, then  I poured out old fuel, mixed new oil and gas and some Seafoam, poured in, changed the spark plug, Pulled the cord  and the fifth pull she fired up.  I ran it for about fifteen minutes added more Seafoam a let it sit until first ice.  She has been ripping holes all winter.  I think Gander has the same style listed for $379.99.

I have a Jiffy model 30, 10" auger. It's about 20yrs old and runs/starts/cuts like new... They must be doin somthing right because they still make that auger, and havent changed it except for the starter handle, gas cap and now its got ripper blades. They aren't the fastest cutters out there, but Ive never quite understood the concept of bein the fastest cutting auger, unless it would be for a competition or somthing...I think its just a marketing ploy.  I rarely punch more than a dozen holes, unless I'm on a new lake trying to find fish so the " When Im punchin 100 holes the time adds up" theory makes me laugh.  Strikemaster and Jiffy both make good stuff, My two cents would be to buy a model that a company has made for some time, and hasnt changed it much, cause it'll last... unless you're of the snowmobiler mentallity of wanting somthing faster than what your friends have. ;)     -thunderpout :happy1:

My dad, family, and I have owned both Jiffy and Strikemaster. We've owned a couple of different Jiffy models (including the model 30 of course) but we gave up on Jiffy's about 7 years ago. It could have just been our experience but we could never seem to get them to run consistently. They always seemed to require a lot of babying on the ice.
We've used the Strikemaster models including the Strikemaster XL-3000, the Electra Lazer and are now myt dad and I each have a Lazer Mag Express.
The Strikemaster XL-3000, which I don't think they make anymore, was the fastest auger I've ever used. If you can find one used, make sure it doesn't show signs of abuse, then, have it tuned (with carb kit). If you can get one new, and they aren't cheap, you won't be sorry. If it runs rough, have it tuned and that puppy will cut through more ice than any auger you will ever own. There are some peculiarities about that auger so if you have one and have questions, give me a shout and I'll see what I can come up with. Those things make cutting holes effortless once you have them running right. They are a bit on the heavy side but outperform Jiffy's 3HP offerings (in my experience). If mine hadn't been stolen from my garage, I would still be using it (best auger I've ever used).  It is also is the coolest looking auger out there if that means anything to you. Just look at this thing (this is my first attempt at attaching a photo so I hope this works).  If my photo doesn't show up, you can see it at this link. Second auger down. They don't build them like this anymore. It's beautiful.

I like the fact that Strikemaster is located up the road and they are very responsive if you have questions or issues. My dad brought my most recent auger (the Express) up to Big Lake for me because it just wasn't running right. Also, the drill unit just wouldn't cut the way it should. Turns out the drill was bent, the blades were mounted with the wrong screws and the power head was way out of whack. They were very apologetic and replaced the drill, blades, and gave me an extra set of blades for the trouble. The initial problems were a pain but we've never had problems with Strikemaster before so I'll chalk it up to a fluke or, the retailer dumping a bad unit on me rather than sending it back to the factory.

The lazer blades don't handle ice with a lot of suspended sediment very well but Strikemaster does make a sharpener (I've not tried it yet), and, you can get blades cheaper through their blade exchange. I haven't used the 4 stroke but have heard from some that have that it is good for opening frozen holes in a house but not great for roaming the ice (the Express is great since it is so light). If running right, it should start within a few pulls. I've learned better than to expect one or even two pull starts on any auger.

Regarding plastic, I don't care for the new designs. They just don't have that "hand it down to your kid look" like the XL-3000 that my dad gave me. The power switch on the Express will break in cold weather if it bangs around in the truck. But, they do have replacement parts available.

Regarding blade design... It is probably a matter of preference but I think the Lazer is faster than the chipper blade on the Mag 2000. I would stay away from the 4 blade design. While it may be faster (don't know, haven't tried it), they are expensive and the reports I've heard are only positive when the blades are absolutely new.

All in all, if you want light and fast, I would go with the Mag Express. For power and bullet proof design, I would find an XL-3000. Hope this wasn't too long and rambling...

I have a SM XL 3000 that I just purchased used off craigslist last weekend. I have only used it to pop around a dozen holes so far but it works great. Plenty of power for the 10" auger mine came with. I think my blades may be alittle dull but it came with a set of used sharpened blades and also a new set so I will swap them out. Like was said above, the unit seems very rugged and should last me many years.

I use a SM mag with the chipper blade. It is not the faster auger out there but having moved from an old Eskimo (20yrs old) to this one it cuts great never gives me problems and i did not spend a fortune on it.
I only cut about 10-15 holes each outing so the extra money for cutting faster was not a concern to me. I like the 1 blade chipper blade !

I have the Jiffy Stealth 3 Hp and that baby cuts like crazy. You can also fall in the holes if you aren't careful ;D :oops1:. I like the extra room for other gadgets such as the cameras, vex's.

Yep, the 10" auger is the way to go, no matter what brand.  If they made a 12" auger I'd get one!   -thunderpout :happy1:

Thanks for your opinions guys.  I've been looking at the SM 4 stroke, and decided to get it after Gander had it on sale this past weekend for 399.  With my 10% off birthday coupon, I ended up getting it for 360.  Man, does it purr.  It was even too cold for me this weekend up here, so I'm waiting for this weekend to give it a try.

I've had a few Jiffy's over the many, many years of ice fishing-kept trading up but not because they didn't work or I didn't like them. Only Jiffy will be in my hands. Smooth running, fast drill, super smooth holes, blades stay fairly sharp- atleast I haven't had to replace any yet. Jiffy has my vote.

I got both, a jiffy that we use in the perm and a lazer we take when we go portable.
The jiffy is a 10 inch auger and is heavier than sh**
The lazer cuts ice real fast and is light weight.
The Jiffy is nice cause of the larger holes, it's a bi*ch to start, but when it runs, it cuts good. It has more torque than the lazer.
I tried the 10 auger with the lazer and it didn't perform as well as the jiffy, so we use the 8" auger on it.
Lazer works better with the extentions.

So, there are pro's and con's with both.

I couldn't agree more with the last two posts. I had a Jiffy 30 10" and it ran great, always started, but I thought it was too heavy. My new Lazer 224 8" is lighter and will cut holes faster. I miss 10" holes but I now find myself cutting twice as many holes when I get to a spot, which makes me more effective.

Both Strikemaster and Jiffy use Tecumseh powerheads . They are just painted different and maybe they use different gas tanks or mufflers. It is all in how the carb is adjusted for how they run and start .  I had a Strikemaster Mag 3 for a lot of years. Rebuilt the carb 4 times in that period and adjusted it every fall. It ran great . The last time I rebuilt it  I noticed that the cylinder was getting scuffed up from the piston . I sold to a friends son for $75 and it still runs today . Now I have a Jiffy stealth 8". It has the same power head on it as the old mag 3. Different muffler makes it quieter . The Jiffy cuts holes way faster than the old Mag 3 . I like them both . Not to keen on the strikemaster blades unles they are the old chipper style . I drill alot of old holes .
