Where should I begin, with the wind or the slow walleye bite? Well let us start off with the wind. The past two weekends have been very windy. The wind this weekend was not what we wanted to see. We had some wind gusts on Saturday that were in the high 50 mph range. I spent most of Saturday afternoon running down to the boat ramp, to get people off the lake when the winds came up. I saw a few boats running for safe harbor, but as they did the winds where gusting up to 50 mph and the boats where starting to get vertical as they ran to Eddies to get out of the wind and waves. I have not seen these kinds of wind gusts since last winter.

They are predicting great weather for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, with 70 degrees and no rain. We will take it, as the walleyes have not been biting very well so far this season. I had a feeling that we would have a tuff bite with the late ice out. We are still only 48 degrees for water temps, and the walleyes have not been very hungry. Most of the fish that are being caught rite now are males. There are not many females being caught and that tells me that we are still in an early post spawn mode. As we get closer to 52 to 55 degrees the bite should and will improve dramatically over the next 2 weeks.

It is nice to see the lake level come up about 8 inches so far this spring. Just so that we do not lose a lot of water over the summer, the lake should recover nicely. I wish I had better news on the walleye bite, but I am still very optimistic that the bite will improve over the next few weeks. With that being said, hold on to your wallets, as the gas prices start to climb up to $4.00 per gallon this week. Make Mille Lacs your destination this year. It is close to the twin cities and you can get here and back home a tank full of gas.

Have a great week
