I would like to hear some fishing reports from this neck of the woods, if anyone has been fishing.

Babes bait in Ely has some great reports in the Ely forum and also the MNO reports page, Babes generally updates his reports 3 times a week. The current picture of the week on the main page is also from Babes.

Sounds and looks like some great fishing up there.

Leave Sunday June 8th. Looking forward to getting back up in the area. We'll be camping, canoeing and fishing. It should be a good time.

I'm not 100% sure yet. We are staying on Fall Lake and going from there. Russ from Babes is going to go out with us on Monday so I am not sure what he had planned but I am looking forward to getting into some Smallmouth and walleye! I'm also hoping we can catch a few crappies and maybe a northern or two. I'm just excited to sit bck and enjoy the view and the campfire. Its been a while since I camped up in that area. Actually its been way too long. There were a couple small lakes that we wanted to hit but I can't remember the name right now. Ever fish Fall Lake???

We did stay at a campground on Fall Lake about 35 yrs ago with a pop up camper and a car top boat. I remember catching a variety of fish, but nothing in the way of lunkers. That was the first time I ever went to Basswood starting from Fall and across the old 4 mile portage into Basswood.

I went by myself to Basswood and never had a map, so didn't venture to far for my first time. Hard to remember to many details since it was the first and last time I stayed on Fall.

We've got a place on Fall - pretty much spent my childhood putting around on Fall with a 12' Grumman and a 1957 Johnson 5 1/2 horse.

The campground is very nice - lots of newer renovations to the bathrooms/showers, and they added a group camping area a couple of years ago.  Blasted some partridge around the campground last fall (after the loops had been gated for the season).

Fishing has been fairly good.  There were roughly 18 boats down at the Power Dam at any one time last weekend, and those who understood which end of the rod to hold were catching walleyes.  I didn't see any real monsters being caught, but that is par for the course.

On Saturday there was some sort of boat collision down on the campground end of the lake.  The Forest Service plane was circling and the sirens were wailing as rescue crews arrived.  Didn't hear a lot about it, just that a couple of boats met up and one sank.  No word of injuries.

You might be heading down through Newton into Pipestone Bay of Basswood.  There are two portages that you use portage wheels on to reach Pipestone.  Reports have been good from Pipestone, and the DNR even nabbed a few folks for various violations a couple of weeks ago.  One fellow I talked to on Sunday was complaining that the fish were too big - he was having trouble finding the little ones that he wanted for eating purposes.

Walleyes are still relating to the current areas, which makes things a bit simpler for locating fish.  By the time we get to the 8th or so, the bass should be on the move.  We pulled in a few larger females this past weekend, and the eggs were still rock hard.

We did a little canoe fishing in a remote lake this past Saturday, but finally gave up around mid-afternoon.  The wind was absolutely brutal, and with the rapidly shifting gusts anchoring was not an option either.    Early Monday morning I peeked out of the cabin at around 5 a.m., and saw a few snowflakes mixed in with the rain, as a nasty north wind whipped the lake up.  I crawled back into bed  -  plenty of summer left to fish!

Yeah that happens often on fall lake with boats down there at camp ground landing..Can horns are a great thing to have down that way..

They are catching at the damn, but nothing really big.. if you go off the boat landing there just a bit to your left you will see a island... go to the left tip, thats always a hitter there.. and down in the bay in winton right off the ely winton rod and gun club is another, besides the damn there..

I say go to white iron lake.. go to beargrease island, and fish right where the river comes in, just off that island there, and don't forget about the tip of the island there too, If your going with Russ he will show you, they have been hitting big there and big ones tooooo.. Good walleye..
Russ from babes will take you to some honey holes.. maybe i will come down too.. meet ya eye to eye....
that might be good

This is great info. Thank You!

Due to gas prices we are taking the car and leaving the boat at home. We will have a canoe. What are my options for fishing out of a canoe on Fall Lake. From the map it looks like a pretty good sized lake. I know my cousin spoke of some portages. Any input or suggestions?

Thanks!

I was up at my cabin near Finland last weekend . Brought a service tech for some of the presses at work who was from Sweden . He'd never fished with leeches before . We got into some decent walleyes on a lake east of Isabella .  We kept 7 with 2 at 20" and a couple more at 18" . Did'nt matter  what the bait was . Minnows, crawlers and leeches all worked as well as drifting or bobber fishing . Also we fished from 11am to 7 pm before we got chased off by a storm cell , so it was day fishing. Caught a number of Northerns too,but they all went back .

He enjoyed himself . He wants to go back up next year . He also said that the area is a lot like northern Sweden with fewer moose . We did see a cow and calf while fishing . He said that areas of northern Sweden have so many moose that there are fences 8' high along the roads .  He was comparing wildlife . They have Martins but we did not see any Pine Martins . I have one that occasionally comes around the cabin . He said that they have walleyes, perch , northerns and trout , but no panfish . He was hoping to see a wolf . Even with my 20-30 trips a year up there I only see 1 or 2 every year . Super nice guy . His english is well enough that we could BS but he was at a loss for some words and they came in Swedish . We would figure it out.

He was here last January and I took him out on West Rush near my home. He had never fished out of a fish house . They put up wind breaks . He was glad we were in a house as the morning low was -35 . He caught crappies and perch . He also brought the Jagermeister .
