Once again the time came for the youth waterfowl day, took the nephews out for a try at bagging some waterfowl. It must be about the fourth or fifth year in doing so, and these guys love it. We got out to the pond at opening shooting time and headed for the dike and waited for the birds to head out, well about five minutes later  out they came, the first bunch went out just a little to our right, so we moved down the dike a little and the second group came right over, POW, MNkid1 lets off a shot and down comes a nice goose, he is so jacked up that he just hoots and hollers he got one, and he forgot to keep on shooting at the rest of the bunch, this is his first solo honker.

Now we head back to the pickup and unload the canoe and head out on the water to set up. the water is real shallow and we bottom out, so we can't get to where we wanted to go, but set up in a spot that we could paddle to. Well it worked out ok, MNkid1 got his second honker and MNkid2 also got one also, along with one mallard, and many other chances at birds through out the morning. It's sneaking up on noon so time to head out and call it a day, getting a little quiet at the pond now, but a good outing has been had.
here is the days take,

Mnkid1 says, do you think they can see me?

my Brittany on a water retrieve,

Mnkid2, says good dog.

All in all a good day for the kids, 2 big canada's, one lesser, and a mallard, best youth day ever, so far.
Did any one else get the youngsters out ?

I'm not a believer in the youth hunt. I didn't need one when I grew up, and I love duck hunting. It's the dads that don't let the youngsters get the shots that causes bad tastes in the youngsters mouth.

I was surprised by your response Hunter2, and I certainly do not mean to offend you in any way, I am just curious as to why you are not a believer in the youth hunt?  I get that they didn't have it when you grew up, but is that your reason why you don't like it?  I mean they didn't have a lot of things when I grew up either that they have now, so I don't think that is your reason.  Do you care at all to elaborate on this?  If you don't, it's not a big dea...I'm just curious.

GG, some guys think that by having a youth day that it interferes with the regular opener for themselves by pushing local birds out. Now I am pretty sure Hunter2 isn't this IMMATURE. I my self am not a big believer in it my self. If more parents would take the time to bring the kids out when they are in the outdoors, not just for duck hunts, we wouldn't need special days for it. On the other hand I could care less if they have these "special days" because it just makes one more day for me to bring junior out!!! :woot:
