Where to look for a deer yard and what to look for?

What is the true meaning of one and how does one tell when you come across one?  What types of cover are they generally around and is there usually a ton of sign or is this way of thinking way off track(NO PUN INTENDED)?

generaly deer yards are cedar swamps. they tend to be warmer and cedar foliage is deers favorite food in the winter. i have never seen one in the winter or looked for sign as i lived in brainerd and dont have any around. they are said to travel miles and miles to get to these cedar swamps for food and shelter. these swamps should also be by flowing water. as far a areas that have no cedar, they will probably find a good pine stand somewhere near flowing water. red and white pine buds are another valuable food source for deer in the winter. in my area we live right by the river and thats where the deer tend to hang is near the water. in the spring we see them move back into the woods scrounging for whatevers being revealed or can be dug up from under the snow. as far as bedding in my area they like the south facing hillsides and thick areas with pine, anywhere theres sun or cover from the wind. thats what i have heard and observed in my area.
