Antler Shed Traps

Has anyone used one of these or know anyone that has tried. I have been researching them and have found a few different methods.

Looking for input.

Thanks!

Its just a contraption put on a feeder,  in some instances just a 2x4. I wonder why that would be illegal and how one would determine that what theu are seeing is illegal. Last night at work I read many other forums discussing this topic through a google search and the topic of it being illegal or legal came up. In that instance they just thought it was illegal because it was illegal to feed and/or bait deer in those areas.

When's a good time to start looking for sheds?  Where do you guys typically find them? (near fences, wintering areas, etc)

The only place I have ever had any luck was on Ebay. I go walk for days on end then I hit the internet   :doah:

Where are these laws from? Reason I ask is I'm wondering if it's federal or what? I wouldn't think it's a MN reg as that I know of we don't have caribou here. Well guess it could be as it's illegal to fish for trout off the back of a girraff in Idaho. Just dumb

Looks like a federal law which would superseed a state law. On the other hand when laws are written the wordage is expanded to enclose those who are looking for any loop hole to get around them. Just because there are no caribou in MN now does not in the lawmakers eyes mean there may not be some in the future. Harder to revise a law then getting it right the first time. We have more then enough laws already, don't need any more.

this is a minnesota state law. and we used to have woodland caribou in mn but they have been pushed to only a few areas in canada i believe. it may also be because of what bobby said. someone then could say they thought there were caribou and thats why they were using it.

i wont be looking for them for another 2-3 months, but good places to find them are beddding areas, fence crossings, food sources, places were a trail leads under a over hanging branch that could knock them off.

Do to the unusually harsh conditions early this year, I would expect they would start dropping earlier.  I usually don't start finding them regular until the 1st or 2nd week of Febuary, but expect to start finding them sooner this year. I know of two people who claim to have seen shed bucks so far.  One was killed in the 2nd gun season, and one was seen along the roadside the 3rd week of December.  I would think it would be cheaper to put out a pile of shell corn in the 2nd week of January and make sure it lasts till end of Febuary.  A couple hundred bucks worth of bulk will usually do the trick.  A friend of mine does this every year and we find most of the antlers within a couple hundred yards of the piles or on surrounding brushy hillsides.

Talked to a guy in Iowa on Sunday and he found 13 antlers this past weekend and said he is seeing alot of deer with half a rack. So I think they are dropping early.

A good "natural" antler trap is to find some low tree limps or brush just off a trail and put some food in the middle of it like alfalfa pellets or corn to attract the deer to that spot and when the duck their heads in to eat some there you go. let nature help you out and that would be legal. Because you are just providing the deer food to get through the winter and are not baiting because the season is over and your using the tree limbs to knock off the antlers. just my two cents
