I should know this, but am having a mental block.

I am currently in the process of selling my boat, and found the trailer title, but I can't find the title for the boat anywhere. Then it dawned on me, would the bank that holds the lien against the boat have it? Does the bank keep it until the loan is paid off and the lien released?

Anyone able to help? Thanks!

to answer your question, whomever holds the lien on your boat, hods the title on your boat.  Simplified, that's who has it.

If this is right, then I can stop ripping my house apart looking for the thing and I don't have to apply for a duplicate title.

The bank should have it.

.

Geezus, I might have actually. I am terrible at remember these types of things!!

I just found the title for one of our vehicles, and it has a lien (loan) against it with the same bank. That suggests to me I should have the title for the boat.

i just bought a new truck and the title was sent to me, i would think that you should have it. the only thing is that it would say it has a loan on it. P.S. what kind of boat and how much you want for it?
my wife said it.... im OFFICIALLY ADDICTED to MNO!!

call the bank, you will have to pay it off and get a lien
waiver before selling. they probly have a copy of the title.

So I found out today from the DNR that boats 16' and under do NOT need a title. However, if you have a lien against it (a loan), a title is required. That title was supposedly sent to my bank, but my bank doesn't have it. So I'll need to apply for a duplicate.

I was a loan officer for two years and have a boat with a loan on it.  The bank should have been sent the title. If they do not have it either they or the state screwed the pooch.  Vehicle titles with loans on them get sent to the owner, boats get sent to the bank.

never had to go through it with a boat but it's happened a few times where the bank has lost my truck title.  I refinanced my loan and a few weeks later got a letter saying they needed my title, but they had already had it for almost a year...  so I've decided to just pay cash for stuff from now on whenever possible.  banks are irresponsible!

My wife and I just bought a townhome recently, and had to push the closing date back twice because the bank couldn't find the title (bank owned foreclosure prior to us getting it).  Finally I told them to find the title or we would retract our bid and go elsewhere.  Somehow they found the title in 3 hours?
