Most Versitle Best Valued Shotgun

Obvious rookie here...

Im looking into buying a shotgun and was wondering what peoples opinions are on a good, introductory gun.

Im looking for something versitle.  I was thinking that I would use the gun for Pheasant/Grouse, Turkey, duck, goose, and potentially deer.  Is a 20 gauge acceptable for this or would a 12 be a better bet?  What options are going to be good?  Choke, mag, super mag, rifled barrel on the side?

Im looking for something with some quality.  Remingtons and Mossburgs have some inexpensive options but are they a good gun?

Any opinions would be great!

Well this is an easy one.....

For your money you cannot go wrong with a Remington 870.

I have been shooting this gun for 16 years. It is an 12 gauge 870 pump.

The gun is durable and for the money there is not a better one out there.

i second the 870.  you can easily find a rifled slug barrel for it too for deer later if you want.
make sure your gun can handle up to 3 1/2" shells though, don't be limited to 2 3/4".

I'll have to agree with the above posts. The 870 is the most popular shotgun made in the US. It's a great all around gun. You won't be disappointed.

it will take the 3 inch shells and gobble up and spit out every lowbase target load you throw at it.
a very good gun for the money.

) the remington 870, i have been shooting this fine american peice of firearm since the mid 70,s. it sure has the ableity to handle it all, the 12 g. will probably be the best bet as the 12 is most common? to share shells when you run low or out. :)

It really depends on what action you want to shoot,, The rem. 1187 and 1100 it the gun that really gets the all around best ratings in pretty much every show or book yea read.

2nd in over all is the 870 but thats a pump gun ( not that there is anything wrong with that ) it just gets second in OVER ALL  ratings but get first in the pump guns..

the Remington autos have allot of differant choices in barells and stocks in allmost any sport you wish to partake in..

me on the other hand you try to take my 391 away from me and you may end up getting hurt,,,

The thing is you need to find a gun that fits you and your pocket book,,,,I know allot of guys shooting the mosbergs to and they allways seem to have a freezer full .....good luck with your quest for your new gun if you have any questions call me or email me

The only think I have to say about lower end auto is I think they Jam alot after years in the field. maybe I am wrong but everytime I hunt with someone with an auto they jam.

I got my 870 when I was 12 years old. I am now 28....

 My youngest son Danny bought an 870 two months ago. With proper care, should last a lifetime.

I've had a remington model 12 for 24 yrs that I bought new. Only problem I had with it was when I buldged the barrel. That was my fault I should have known when I fell down sticking my barrel into the dirt that I should clean it out b4 trying to shoot the squirrel I was chasing.

This gun is the same as an 870, all parts are interchangable. The only difference is in the stock, the kind of wood.

Wow $239 for an 870, that is what I paid for my model 12, 24 yrs ago. I saved a hundred bucks on the model twelve over the 870. WOW I wished gas was the same price as 24 yrs ago.
