Daytona

Good lord did you EVER think the race was going to start?  After listening to a crappy singer destroy the national anthem, we had to listen to the same commentary from the last few years.  Daytona is the superbowl of Nascar, Daytona is the one race every driver wants to win, it's the BIG SHOW...  :blablabla: we know this! We heard pretty much the same thing verbatim last year and the year before that.  Can't they come up with something new?

And what's with the dancers in the infield shakin it while someone is on stage "singing"?  I'd rather see more racing related things, like behind the scenes stuff at the race shops or a driver relaxing at home, things you don't normally see.  Save the money on all the "entertainment" and show things more pertanent to racing.

One thing I did find funny was earlier on Speed they were talking about Earnhardt/Ganassi merger.  They said "at least they didn't call it Chip and Dale racing"!   :rotflmao:       (Chip Ganassi and Dale Earnhardt)

Daytona After listening to a crappy singer destroy the national anthem,
IMO, it was still 10X better than the Superbowl's National Anthem put to crappy music. That completely destroyed it, and to me, was a disgrace to our anthem.

I agree, at least they haven't gone as far as to put Brittany Spears or someone of similar hip-hop lineage on stage.

I would say Daytona is top three events of the year for me...that being said it is really dissapointing that they decide to end the races due to weather once they reach a certain point.  It would be like calling game 7 of the world series after six innings because it down poured.  I say red flag the race until you can finish it.  The last 50-75 laps is almost the entire race.  Everyone just tries to hang around until then so that they can put the hammer to it and really start racing for 1st.

I completely agree. I think they really jumped the gun on declaring it "over". Before the race started, I thought that if they had to stop it, we would still be waiting it out. I have watched a few races in previous years that were delayed for hours until they could run the rest of the race. I think the fans really got screwed this year, not only for the weather issue, but the Jr. issue also. There was no reason not to penalize him like they had in the Nationwide race. Equality is more important than a name. I could see a lawsuit against Nascar over that one.

I see the Jr. issue as a horse apiece he did get blocked to the point where he was run into and then Jr went back onto the track and hit him.  I almost see the initial block as worse because it was blatanly done on purpose.  You cannot blame Jr for wanting to get back on the track and not hit the grass.  What also needs to be realized is both cars are going about 185 MPH.  Stuff just happens way too fast and we can't make judgements based on slow motion replays!!  I am actually a little tired of Nascar and the penalties.  They are the ones who made the race what it is with the restrictor plates.  If they do not want that close of racing take the plates off and have the cars spread out over the entire 2.5 mile track.  Personally I like the plates and drafting so I have no problem with some extra contact...tempers will flare and unfortunately some drivers will be innocent victims.

I agree with things moving too fast and Nascar with their penalties, BUT, if you do it to 1 you should do it to everyone. Its BS that because of a name and his popularity that he gets off scott free.

First off, should I take offense to that? (Scott free)      :whistling:    :bonk:

Secondly, calling the race over after maybe 15 minutes of rain delay was a totally horrible call on NASCARs part. It's the Daytona 500, let's try and get the entire race in for the fans and out of respect to everything these teams do and go through to be around at the end of the 2 weeks of hype (Shootout, Qualifying, Gatorade Duels and the first 475 miles of the actual race) for the final laps of this race.

Lastly, Vickers blocked Earnhardt down below the yellow line and into the grass. When you block, you put yourself in a position of being spun or put into the wall. Prime example: Dale Earnhardt Sr trying to block Sterling Marlin and Ken Schrader in the final laps of the 2001 Daytona 500...we all know the outcome of that blocking.

Not a very good start to the 2009 season for NASCAR or Dale Jr in my opinion. Hopefully NASCAR will make be able to make some better judgement calls down the opening stretch of this season and not lose more fans than they already have with all the bogus rules and inconsistent enforcement of said rules.

Absolutely, no favorites should be played.  It sucks that promotion of the sport and ratings get in the way of the purity and rules.

I think the pre selected race time is a good one, because it gives the drivers, teams, and fans a little more interesting race. You go from sun overhead, to driving into it, some parts of shaded track, to cooloer temps, night race and a totally different track. If you cant stay on top of the conditions, your car falls off. IMO it makes it way more interesting than an all day race, BUT, that also would have been on a sunny day. They can't, at the last minute, change the race time because of weather. There is way too much coordination with fox, fans, etc. to bump the race up a few hours.

When I first saw the wreck take place, I was very disapointed.  And I disregarded commentators remarks and viewed the footage to come up with my own opinion.  Up until I saw the in car video I thought maybe the commentators were right that Jr was having a bad day and purposely wrecked Vickers.  If he did it purposefully, it would be extremely rare.  As that is NOT in his character.  Once I saw the in car video however I could see both sides of the arguement.  It did look like he wanted to stay on the track vs a ride in the grass.  And after the interviews were over it was obvious that Jr didn't even know he was racing Vickers for the lucky dog.

Nascar calling the race due to rain again was  :bs: plain and simple.  Helton claimed after review with their weather guys that rain would continue for at least another hour and a half, making the startup around 11pm-wasn't reasonable.  However I believe they have postponed racing until the next day-why didn't they do it this time?  Oh well it's over now.  But if I was a ticket holder, I'd be writing to someone wanting 40% of my ticket price refunded since I only got 60% of my moneys worth of racing!  (ok so not likely to happen-but it would be nice)  If they would have just started it at noon, skipping all the prerace jibber jabber-they could have gotten the race in.  They have started races earlier before due to incoming weather-you'd think with a race as big as Daytona-they'd have considered that!  Apparently not.

Bring on California!   :happybounce:

I got lucky for sure. I believe this is the first time I've had all four drivers cross the finish line at Daytona. Who knows what would have happened had they finished the race.

So Randy, how'd you like all that Digger talk, cartoon, song and stuff in the prerace?  I thought of you when I watched it, and I think I threw up a lil in my mouth as well.  Ol DW must have his hands in Digger's wallet as he is promoting the snot out of anything Digger!

The race was interesting only because I didn't know who's engine was going to blow next!  Although I'm not a huge Kenseth fan, I would have liked to see him pull out a third win.  Heck anyone other than "Bugs Bunny" or Juan Pablo would have been fine by me.  He's got talent, and in many ways I see a lil of ol #3 in his driving.  However, this kid is wreckless and arrogant as all getout!  In my opinion NASCAR doesn't do anything about it as it's ratings for them.  In an era where drivers are told to back off on the aggressiveness, it seems they turn a blind eye on this guy.  Someday it'll catch up to him, I just hope it doesn't take anyone out (temp. or permanently) when it does!  There was rumors he might consider going to F1 racing....Hey Kyle,...I'll help ya pack buddy!  Let's get you over there ASAP!!!!  Don't want you to miss out on anything there!  ;D
