Well I am missing in action here for awhile. Two days ago I had my chimney on my house topple and fall against one of my sections of roof, the top ΒΌ broke off and went down to the next roof below where it broke through the kitchen roof. I was at  the kitchen table with my wife and granddaughter when we heard and felt the crash and had ceiling tile come down.

Am now dealing with insurance company which the first thing they told me was they do not replace chimneys.  I have a hole in my roof, roof damage, an extra 2000# that don't belong there and last night I got the chimney taken apart and pulled back from the edge so it can't go down to the next roof and make me another skylight. Go in the house after cleaning up brick from yard to find my kitchen flooded with sewage. Soil stack got clogged with rubble. Toilet backed up...

This morning I managed to get the soil stack cleared and now I am back to where I was yesterday just left with more cleanup to do. And now it's starting to rain..

When it rains, it pores.  Sorry to hear about the bad news.  Best of luck dealing with your insuranse co.  Try to stay posative.  Its a good thing the roof held enough to keep you and your family from getting squished.
Anything that is free is worth saving up for.

Funny how a few days with out hot water and then no toilet how the women will turn on ya! Of course the day after the roof caved in I went fishing  :fishing2: I mean it was a planned trip and nothing I could do till the insurance guy came anyway. Wife had different thoughts.. O and Dakids, I had a nice one on for a few seconds right at the boat. I will be returning to that lake when the weeds die down some so I think we have a chance at a nice upgrade on our Northern!

Man O Man Bobby! I don't know how you managed to maintain your sanity :taz: through all that. I'm sure that having had becoming a 2008 Fishing Challenge Champion :king: had a lot to do with it. All kidding aside Borgie and I wish you and the Mrs. a smooth recovery with your repairs.

I'm glad to see that your not letting the mishap interfere with your fishing :fishing: After all that has happened you need that fishin time to clear your head.

Here is a picture of the top section that fell onto the kitchen roof, this section was estimated to weigh around 300# it went through the roof and was stopped inside the kitchen ceiling by a 2x6 that it folded up like a toothpick. And inside wall stopped the section from going any farther.

This picture shows where we were sitting when it came down.

And this is my new skylight!

The good things, yes no one was hurt and of the four directions it could have fell the way it did was the best. The chimney intact would have gone through roof and floors I was told. The worst part so far is the first bid to replace the chimney was 6800.00 and the insurance company has already stated they will not cover the cost of replacement.. Guess I will be learning how to lay brick!

Ya, easy for you to say, you got experence building 12' of chimney on top of a two level roof? while your there you can remove the broken 2000 pounds of brick in the valley, have to bucket it down because I am right next to my neighbor and I am not about to throw it down on my cedar deck.. :doah:

Instead of replacing the chimney, did you think about just getting it out of there, fixing the damage, and putting in an outdoor wood stove?  Just a thought.  Good luck with everything!

Not really an option, been there done that. Getting to old to be splittin wood and touching it 10 times before you are done. I also do my hot water oil to so I need a chimney back. Already hired a guy and I hope in a few weeks I will be all fixed and reroofed.  Hey drummer I mentioned your name to my mason and your four chimneys at what 22? he hopes they don't get inspected.. :moon:

that puzzles me on how that works. if you pay home owners insurance, how can they say we will insure your entire house but not your chimney? isnt that not part of the house? thats why i hate insurance companys its all so dumb at times

Cody, I'm in the insurance buisness but not the property and casualty part. But from what i heard in the classes is "some" home owners policies don't cover alot of general things that you might think they would! Cody, idk if you own a house or not but go read someones policy and you will find the thing covered and others are not. If its not in there it's not covered!

Bobby you should ask your insurance agent if you need a seprate rider for your chimney? Gees  :rotflmao:

Update: 10 days after the toppling chimney the insurance company has now decided they will pay for the chimney! Of course since there is no chart for toppling chimneys I have to broker a deal between myself, the insurance company and a contractor to do the job with the insurance adjuster as the umpire. I am better off then I was nine days ago but nothing has been fixed yet.. So glad it is not  :snow4: out...

Three weeks from "the surprise from the sky" and I have an offer from the insurance company. Still dragging my heels but winter is coming and I need to get a real fix done to the chimney and roof. Might have to just settle which makes the insurance company happy and get on with the repairs. Going to cut into my fall fishing and hunting, I mean ya get a nice day what do you do? Fish  :fishing2: go bird hunting   :fudd: or pound nails on a roof   :bonk: :doah:
