Deer slugs for Winchester model 50?

For anyone who has a Winchester Model 50, what brand of rifled deer slugs have you found is the most consistent in your gun?

I have a friend who is deer hunting with us for the first time and we stopped at Cabela's and picked up a couple of boxes of Winchester slugs. When we got out in the field to sight the guns in, his patterning was very irregular. All of his shots were 6-8 inches high and to the left mainly at 45-50 yards.

I had him shoot a couple of my Federal slugs through his gun and it brought him back into a 3-4 inch pattern around the bullseye at 45-50 yards so I am assuming (correctly or incorrectly) that his gun just does not like the Winchester ammo, which is what I found about my Remington not liking Remington ammo which is why i shoot Federals.

Any suggestions on what brand of ammo (deer slugs) have worked for you or a friend in this Winchester Model 50 would be greatly appreciated.

Was he flinching as he pulled the trigger?  I know I do when I get the 30.06 out and start to fire the first few rounds through it.  Scope bite still has me on edge.

Or it could be the gun?  I usually buy a one box of different brands to see which perform better, but I have no experience with a Win 50.  Great idea to get out now versus lose or wound a nice deer. Not enough people do this in my mind....

Cody, he is shooting a smooth bore with rifled slugs.

Go Big Red, he may have flinched slightly on one of his first shots, but I stood behind him and watched 6-7 shots after that and he did not flinch from what I saw.

some guns are tempermental about what shells they want to shoot. i know mine is. try hornady rifled slugs i hear good things about them.

I've always had good luck with brenekke(sp?) slugs. Or the Remington "slugger" basic rifled slugs.

Good.  That was going to be my next questions, were you standing behind him.  I guess I would buy one box of different brands and give them a whirl.  I have shot the Winchester' and Brenneke slugs from a 20 g. and those seem to work well for me.

Thanks for the replys everyone. I have shot the Brenneke slugs through my Rem 870 for a few years and then one year Cabelas was out of them so I switched to the Federals and they are very consistent for my gun so i stuck with them.

I'll have Jeff try the Hornadys and Brennekes through his WIN 50 and see how they group up for him.

Since he is shooting a smooth bore, I'd say shoot the cheapest shells he can find. By that I mean shoot foster slugs. It's not a brand name just the name of the guy who designed that type of slug. They can be rifled or not, hollow point or not, it doesn't matter as neither make any diff in a foster slug other than to catch hunters.

DO NOT SHOOT A SABOT THROUGH A SMOOTHBORE IF YOU WANT ACCURACY. THE BULLETS JUST TUMBLE THROUGH THE AIR.
