Upper Red Lake walleye size limits remain in place

The Associated Press
ST. PAUL, Minn. — Regulations that require anglers on Upper Red Lake to release smaller walleyes during the first month of the season will remain in place this season.

From Saturday, May 15, through Monday, June 14, Upper Red Lake anglers must release all walleye 17- to 26-inches long. That protected slot narrows to 20-26 inches on Tuesday, June 15.

Gary Barnard, DNR Bemidji area fisheries supervisor, says a single, year-round regulation would be simpler, but these rules balance fishing opportunities against the need to protect spawning walleyes.

The possession limit remains four walleyes and only one can be longer than 26 inches. The size limit reverts back to the 17- to 26-inch protected range for the winter ice fishing season.
