The Sturgeon keep season opened yesterday and runs through May 7th. Anglers can keep one fish between 45 and 50 inches or one over 75 inches. All you need is a Minnesota fishing license to fish for them, but the additional purchase of a $5 Lake Sturgeon tag will allow you to keep one fish. (The tags are available at the lodge.) Many anglers will be taking home their one keeper between 45 and 50 inches from yesterday. We heard of a +75 inch Sturgeon last week, which would likely be the state record if it was caught during a keep season. They are definitely out there waiting to be caught in the Rainy River!

The boat landing has been packed this weekend with many boats fishing out in front of the lodge, in 4 Mile Bay and out in The Gap. Things should quiet down this week and that will only help fishing with less pressure. The flow is very manageable on the river. Boat control is not an issue. Most guys are anchoring their boats and using a 1 ounce weight on their line, which is more than enough right now. As usual, night crawlers are the bait of choice. One of our charters had some big Walleye yesterday while targeting Sturgeon as well. It has been common for Sturgeon fishermen to run into some nice Walleyes during the last week.

The weather has been as good as it can get for this time of year with temperatures in the 60s and 70s every day. It looks like more of the same for the upcoming week. While most fishing is closed down, right now is the perfect time to head up North and try your luck at hooking into a monster Sturgeon.
