This buck was shot on opening day of the rifle season last year.  He made it through the winter,  Looks a little thin and he isn't putting a lot of weight on the leg, but he is still alive.  He is a regular to the mineral site so hopefully I continue to get pictures.

Is it the left front leg where he was hit? And when you say you're going to keep an eye on him - is it to see how he fares or are there other reasons?

Just wondering as I sip on a refreshing adult beverage.

Doug it is his front left leg.  We found large chunks of his led bone where he crossed the road.

Last year he was a stud of a deer.  Main frame 9 pointer with a bit of trash.  With the injury to the front left leg his right antler should be deformed.  Hopefully he gains some weight back and has a big rack.  He looks like half of himself this spring.  We have planted more this spring in the way of food plots, which should help.

Is that adult beverage a HAMMS?

Yeah wow that is a nice buck. I see where you're going with this. Poor guy.

As a matter of fact I was sipping on a FAW-KINN-ALE. Very tasty.

That poor deer looks so gaunt in those first pictures, hard to believe he made the winter. by the way he looks, hard to believe he'll get much of a rack, all the nutrition will have to go towards survival. Hope he grows a big rack so you can have a great story to share with friends and family. :USA:

It's amazing how an injured deer can survive.  Interesting to see a deer that you know was wounded to see how he develops this year.

He'll probably have a non-typical rack this yr. We had a buck last yr that was wounded the previous gun season and he went from a beautiful main frame 9 to a non-typical 10.
Here he is in 2008 as a 3 1/2 yr old 9 pt

Here he is last yr at 4 1/2 as a non-typical 10
Let the small bucks walk. Don't assume the neighbors will shoot them if you don't. If you shoot him what chance does that buck have to grow......ZERO!

not to be a downer, but he looks really skinny, also is it me or does his fur look all mangey(sp)i think this buck was lucky that we had a early spring otherwise im positive he would of tipped over if he had to endure any extra winter months.

Cody, I think he looks scraggley because he's just losing his winter coat.  I saw a few up close around the time of this picture and they sure do look tough just as they lose the winter coat.

He is putting on more weight and is looking healthier.  His headgear looks pretty typical but could change.  He is also a little bit behind the other bucks.

He has put on a few inches in the last month, but will not come close to last year.
