What a week of fishing on Lake of the Woods! One day this past week we experienced some tough north winds that did not allow our guides to fish where they would have liked to. Other than that one day, it has been game on! Our guides have been keying in on the deep mud flats for the past couple of weeks now. It sounds repetitive, but the bite continues to be out in 28-32 feet of water. Being on the water every day makes it easier for our guides to follow the big schools of Walleye out in the seemingly featureless areas of the lake. The number of Walleye caught as of late has been great and the quality has been just as good. I could not even guess at how many 25-30” Walleye have been caught during this past week on the charter boats.

Vertical jigging continues to be the most common approach to putting fish in the boat. A 1/4 to 3/8 ounce jig with a frozen shiner, chub, or leech has been the ticket. Crawlers are starting to produce some as well. Drifting with a live bait spinner rig has also been lights out for some of our guides.

Weather this past week was kind of dreary with lots of cloudy days and rain. The water level in the river and out on the lake seems to be back around normal again. It had been low all spring. The ten day forecast shows a bit of a warm up, with temperatures back in the 70s for daytime highs this upcoming week. For a change, the weatherman is also calling for the sun to shine most of the week.

June and July is the perfect time to charter on Lake of the Woods. The water temperatures are warming up and the Walleyes are beginning to spread out across the lake. Typically some of the better fishing can be a considerable distance away, and the best way to get there, in any weather, is in a 27’ Sportcraft! Don’t forget to ask about our July Midweek Charter Fishing Packages.

Fish On!
