:(? Heard from a buddy today his GSP had a run in with a fence over the weekend.? He saw it happen, dog was on a bird and was going through the fence, dog kind of humped up and jumped through, next thing you know, blood all over.? Dog had split himself open from chest to stomach, about like a gutted deer.? Into the vet they went.? Surgery and stitches, unknown cost $!!!.? Dog is out of the game for about 10-20 days depending on how fast he heals.? Talk about a bummer.? ?Not sure what you can do in those situations, majority of the time they make it through just fine, but every once in a while disaster.? Last year another hunting partners lab nearly cut his unit off on a barb, stitched him up on the shaft, needless to say they put him under to do that.? OUCH.

The same thing happened to my dog 5 years ago, we were hunting in Stillwater and she tried jumping a barbed wire fence, she cut the front of her chest wide open, I watched her attempt the jump, but she kept running to the downed bird, retrieved it back to me and I noticed the blood. I swear she would of kept hunting if I hadn't called it a day to get her to the local vet.

After that I went out and bought a nice neoprene chest protector, although she has learned a lesson and is very smart around any type of fence in the woods.

I brought her to the Vet in Woodbury and was given an estimate of $400 to staple her chest and the medications, they instructed me to keep the cone on her for 10 days.

After a couple days of feeling bad for her (she hated the cone) I took the cone off, within a few hours we were headed back to the vet to get the wound re-stapled.... Another $200 for that mistake.

I think we lost about a month of that hunting season, not to mention how out of shape she was when we finally got out again.

My dogs wound was probably 5-6 inches, so if your buddies dogs wound is from chest to stomach? I'm guessing his vet bill is a lot more than my $600. Good luck to him and his hunting partner, Im sorry to hear of this.
