canadian passports

 ??? question? whats the news on canadian passports, i heard that to enter canada after october 2007 that all people crossing the border will need a passport ? can anyone shead a lite on this bit of wild wind.? ????

i don't think it's to enter canada, i think it's to get back into the US.  but in any event, you will need one.  It's no rumor.

Actually I go up to Canada all the time and I was informed to travel anywhere you will need a passport. January 1st. 2007...I would call to make sure but I am pertty sure about this

Current Requirements for Entry Into Canada

Visas are not required for U.S. citizens entering Canada from the U.S. You will, however, need:

proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport (For information on obtaining a U.S. passport, check with one of the regional passport agencies located throughout the U.S.) or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate. A driver’s license, voter’s registration card or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship.

All U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid passport. Alien permanent residents of the U.S. must present their Alien Registration Card, commonly called a “Green Card.”

If you are a dual U.S./Canadian citizen you should always present yourself as a Canadian citizen when entering Canada. However, U.S. citizens should use their U.S. passports when entering or leaving the United States.

Due to international concern over child abduction, single parents, grandparents, or guardians traveling with children often need proof of custody or notarized letters from the other parent authorizing travel. (This is in addition to proof of citizenship as explained above.) Any person under the age of 18 and traveling alone should carry a letter from his/her parent or guardian authorizing the trip. Travelers without such documentation may experience delays at the port of entry.

this sucks... Now I have to spend another 100 plus dollars on a damn passport when I go hunting and fishing in canada.

heres a web and phone number you can check out for help and information   www.travel.state.gov  or the national passport information center(npic) at 1-877-487-2778  (tdd:  1-888-874-7793  and by e-mail at npic@state.gov  m-f  8am to8 pm est.  average time to recieve a passport is 6 weeks!

The passports are good for 10 years though so that's only $10.00 per year. Plus if you ever go on a cruise or out of the country for another reason you will already have it. I think everyone ought to have a passport, you never know when you might need to leave the country fast.

Regarding passports I just received the following information on an e-mail from worry free vacations. I think this explains the confusion regarding passports.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a new passport initiative which will require U.S. citizens and foreign nationals to present a passport when traveling to or from the U.S.
 
This plan will be rolled out in phases as follows:

December 31, 2006 - Passports will be required for all air and sea travel from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean,
and Bermuda.

December 31, 2007 - Passports will be required for ALL land bordercrossings as well as air and sea travel.

At the All Canada Show in Mpls. January 5-7 I talked to both the Canadian and American Custom agents that had a booth.  Land travel by car going into Canada no passport is required but you need a picture ID like a driver's license.  Coming back into the U.S. by car you do not need a passport until January 1, 2008.  Driver's licenses will still work this summer/fall.
