Just wondering what other people do when field dressing a deer

Who cut's the pelvis bone out in the Field?

I used to but don't do it anymore until I get it hug.

It sure does save on getting some good meat dirty.

But I like to get it as open as possible when it's hung to get it cool as fast as I can

I drag my deer down to the bottom of the hill, field dress it at the driveway, clean up the gut pile and then walk to the house to get the truck, load it in the truck and then pull out the hose to clean her up, this is when I will cut the pelvis bone.

The last 3 years have been to warm to hang my deer, so I leave them in the truck, covered with a tarp and then drive them to the butcher after dark each day.

If I was hunting in an area without access to a hose, I would definitely wait to cut the pelvis bone until the deer is hung.

I agree waiting for a hug sure helps to keep the meat from getting dirty!!!? problem is, if you wait until you get a hug, the meat may never get dirty!!!

Good Luck! (and laughs)

Got a knife two years ago that has a saw blade as well.  I have always cut the pelvis immediately and especially now that I hang my deer in the field and don't have access to a hose but instead bring a few gallons of water to wash them out.  Not as good but a bit better than nothing.

I think I would still cut the pelvis in the field just to get everything out of there right away though.
