We get an Indian Summer after all! Temperatures have been in the 70s much of the past week. Winds have been light, and the fishing has been great. What a treat for this time of year.

There’s a mix of anglers fishing the main lake and the river. The public access next to the lodge here has been busy, and for good reason. The bite is on! The most consistent bite is out on the main lake. Fishing has been good from the Lighthouse Gap to Zippel Bay. There are schools of Walleye out as deep as 30 feet of water and in as shallow as 12 feet. The shallow bite is the best in the mornings and evenings. The water seems to be a little cleaner the farther away from the Rainy River and the Lighthouse Gap you get. The cleaner water can make the bite a little better. The fishing in the Rainy River has been hit or miss, but certainly good at times. Mornings and evenings have been the best in the river. Good eater Walleyes and an occasional trophy, lots of Sauger, and a few jumbo Perch have been showing up.

Live bait fishing is the way to go this time of year. Anchoring and jigging with a 1/4 to 3/8 ounce jig and a minnow has been the way to go out on the lake. If you’re fishing the river, a 1/2 ounce jig is the perfect size. Gold, Chartreuse, green, pink and orange have all been good jig colors as of late.  Fatheads, live shiners, and frozen shiners are all doing the trick. A few guys are still using crawlers too.

The one downside to the warm weather this past week is the effect it’s had on the shiner run. Good size schools of shiners had been moving in the river until the warm weather hit towards the end of the week. Now the shiners have all but disappeared. The forecast shows a cooling trend for the upcoming week; that should help get the minnows moving again.

DON’T FORGET the Chili Bowl Tournament is coming up this Saturday. The field is limited to 50 boats, and we are about half full right now. On top of the cash payout we have lots of door prizes to give away. We’re optimistic we’ll have a full field.

Fish On!
