The Twins picked up Carlos Silva's option for next year to the tune of $4.35 million.  They were afraid that with Radke retiring, the jury out on Lirano's arm and three rookies (Bonser, Garza and Baker) the starting rotation was pretty thin.  What do you think??  Should they have picked up the option or used the money to sign someone else - maybe an everyday player??
I fish not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant - and not nearly as much fun.? Robert Traver "Anatomy of a Fisherman"

This was a smart move.  You basically had to keep him with only one proven returned to the rotation.  Silva will at least up innings for us and post a decent record.  I expect him to go 14 - 9 next year with a 4.00 ERA.

The only other thing you could have done is brought him back to arbitration which might have brought his salary down a little.

i think this was a bad move... they could have used his salary to go after someone else in free agency.  silva is a wild card and not worth that amount of money.  I don't think he'll be as good as he was two years ago.  and if he does next year what he did this year... forget about it.
bad move IMHO.

BFG - I see where you are coming from but what else do we have?  Face it Liriano is gone for 2007 and Radke is retiring.  So if we didn't pick up Silva option we would have gone in to the season with Santana and 4 patch work "rookies".

Pick up someone on the FA market you say? Who's out there for that price?  I would rather pay Silva and then use the $ for a bat, but again I remember who our owner is.

Rogers signed a two year deal with Detroit last Dec.  It was for 16 million over those two years.  So, 4 million for Silva insn't that bad.

I guess if he is going to be our 5th starter I can handle him being on the team, but that is a lot more than he is worth.  I would have rather picked up someone else over the winter.  There has to be a better free agent out there that we could have signed instead of him.

They haven't release that yet, but he was pulled from some simple rehab work in Florida because of arm pain.  They are thinking either Tommy Jon or exploratory surgery.  I say just get it done and hang him up for a year.

I agree. he has way too much talent to piss it away by coming in too early. if he could rehab for the whole season and it would get him back on track, then as long he is still ours, it will be worth the wait.

I would still like to see another heavy hitter join the line up. sure wish we still had david ortiz :-\

Can you believe that we let Ortiz walk away after the 2002 season and got nothing in return?

he is playing above the calibur he was contributing while he was here, but we need to recognize such prospects and find a way to keep them. on the other hand, if a player isnt happy, not saying this was the case, they are not going to bloom either.
