When the ice finally gets here I need the help of 5 tip up fishermen to field test a lure for me.  I will send you a 1/32 and a 1/16 oz. ATI tip up jig.  These are designed to be used with a shiner or a sucker.  No split shot should be used.  In theory with the offset hang of the hook the  kahle should act just as a circle hook and would only need reversed tension and not a quick pull to set the hook.   I think fat heads are to small and would not be the bait of choice.  Pike and eyes should be fooled by these.

To be involved in this field test you only need to be a member with 10 posts and willing to provide feedback + or - on this thread.  Pics would be greatly appreciated.  The first 5 to respond here will need to pm me where to send them.  I look forward to trying these out myself.

I got mine yesterday.  They look great!  I'm excited to try the kahle hook and see what happens.  I've never used one before, but I use circles all the time for sturgeon, so I should be able to make a pretty decent comparison.

Are there any specific things, methods, or conditions you'd like us to test?

Thanks again.

    I will be trying these as well.  My theory is that the offset hook angle will cause the minnow to have to work to stay parallel to the bottom.  I plan on using a camera to see if I am right.  The other thing would be if they will outfish a single hook with a split shot. I also think these should be fished as if it is a circle hook with pressure not a hook set.  Thats all theory though so hopefully we will find the answers this winter.   Eventually I am going to go with the red hook.  My understanding is red disappears at a fairly shallow depth.  I sent a couple of you red heads.   Brian I did not get your address on the first run to the post office so yours and doomanmxz99 will be sent out tomorrow.   :reporter;

I will look forward to getting these and giving them try. I will be heading up ti LOW in January so I will try there also. Do you think these would work on a dead stick also???? Looks like they should work??? Any thoughts?

If I was dead sticking specifically for perch, sauger, walleye,  I think the eye-drop  would be better.  It also uses a kahle hook but smaller and could easily be fished with a fathead.  Crappies should have no trouble with the eye-drops either.  The hook is probably too big for sunnies.
I can put the smaller kahle on these new ones but I want to see how they work first.

I will put a couple of eye-drops in with the tip up jigs for you to try dead sticking.  I think when you have them in your hands you will understand what I am talking about.   The eye-drops are approx 1/32oz.  The hook is strong enough to handle the toughest pike should he happen to hit unexpectedly.

All the jigs have been sent.  The last two sets placed in the mail box today.  No mail service today but I would still think you will get them tomorrow or Sat. by the latest.  I did include a couple of ATI-47s in each package.  Since some of you are new here I will give you a couple of technique tips when using the 47s.

The 47s are designed for precision vertical jigging.  They are to be fished with tight line on the lift and the drop.  Unlike a jigging spoon you do not want any slack on the drop.  Often just a jiggle motion with the wrist is enough.  I prefer to use a minnow head that has been torn off not cut off.  These are very effective for dead sticking too.  Any movement by the minnow will give you that little bit of flash to cause the fish to focus on your bait.

Tie onto the eyelet with the flash blade attached.  Tie above the split ring and not to it.  Most of these will have a glow component to them.  Hold your above a black light and then complete darkness to see the glow.  Same with the tip up jigs.  I would not worry about charging them though.  I think they pick up enough ambient light to get a very subtle glow perceptable by fish.   Feel free to ask any questions you might have.  I look forward to ice and hearing your reports.

I am sorry about the eye drops I sent you.  Those were the last 2 that I had left.  I worked on them  this weekend and will have  a new set done by the end of the week.  I can not do gold.  Gold and chrome have to be electroplated.  I have tried different gold paints but they don't cut it.

It's been a while, but conditions prevented me from using your jigs on my tipups until this past weekend.  Needless to say, I got to use your jigs this weekend and I'm very pleased with the results.

My brother and I fished a southern MN lake on Saturday morning.  We got out there and each set up a tipup and each jigged a line.  For the experiment, I used a single red hook with a bead and a split shot about a foot above the hook on one tipup and I used your jig with the kahle hook on the other tipup.  They were 15-20 yards apart from each other on the same flat.

After 3 hours of intermittent panfish action and zero flags, we decided to pick up and go get some breakfast.  I walked to the first tipup with the plain red hook and wrapped it up and headed over to the other one so we could go get some chow.  As I got closer to it, I noticed that the flag was raised a few inches above the pin on the tip up!  It turns out that for some reason, the flag didn't have enough oomph to pull the pin out of the box on my Arctic Siren.

The first thought in my head was that he'd probably spooled me if he didn't get away with the sucker.  God only knows how long he was on the end of that line.  After struggling to get the spool through the 1/2 inch of ice that had formed, I felt weight on the other end of the line.  I set the hook and started pulling it in.  "Oh great, a gut hooked fish.  Now I'm probably going to have to put the knife to a 40" gator" I thought to myself.

As the fish got closer to the hole and I saw my leader come up through the hole, I noticed something in the corner of the fish’s mouth.  It was your jig!  A quick release was made, but not before I was able to snap a pic of the 25” fish with your jig in its mouth.  Unfortunately, that was the last picture I was able to take because my camera battery went kaput immediately after that one was snapped.

I don’t know whether the fish hit an hour or two earlier or if it hit as I was walking to wrap up the tipup.  Either way, the ATI jig performed great and I’ll be switching it to my other tipup before I head out again.

Ps:  I’ll post the pic up later today.

I'm glad you got out.  I can't wait to see the pic.  Batteries and cold just don't mix.  My camera froze up on me Sat.  I thought the batteries were dead but I have been using the camera for the last two days with the same batteries in.  The springs on the tip ups are not all the same.  I had a little clip on light I used to use but sometimes the weight of the light would keep the flag from going up.   :happy1:

Here's the fella I got on Saturday.  Even after being hooked for an unknown amount of time, even possibly up to an hour, the hook landed perfectly in the corner of the mouth.

Good luck guys.  Don't forget to try jigging the white 47s if you find the trout.  I heard that was usually the go to color for grindstone.  I will be out chasing panfish this weekend.  I hope the slush is not a problem for you guys.  Have fun.  ;D
