Walleye in Northeast metro

Hey guys usaaly dont go for walleye but the wife says she wants some this ice season. was wondering what lakes in the Chisago area are the best to try. I hit Chisago on a regular basis for crappie and gills but dont ever seem to here alot about the walleye bite???? Any info would be great     Thanks guys

      This winter I am going to try to stay a little more local.  Back when I fished local I had my best luck with walleye at very first ice. I was a lot younger then so at that time I thought the ice was iffy.  Now I would say I was crazy.  I hope to find some local areas this winter that are overlooked.    Right now is a good time to hit the lake finder link at the top of this forum.  Read the info the DNR has and then keep in mind that their  posted results are a start.  Look for a good population of the  species you are after.  Check out the lake maps and try to pattern the fish before you leave you house.  They can be found.   If you do find them remember that sharing your info on a public forum can destroy a lake for years.

I wasnt looking for anyone to give out there hot spots maybe I asked wrong, was looking to see if my chances were better in my area or should i go out to some other lakes. I dont think giving out that kind of info would destroy a lake for years I think that might be a little extreme in thought because it seems LOW and Winnie seem to be good fisheries and there is a ton of info on them.      The problem with the local lakes is activity.  Thats why first ice,early am.,and right before dark would be your best chance.  Once the vehicles start coming out the bite shuts down for me at least.  I used to like White Bear but I have not fished it since the lake level dropped so much.  Eyes can be caught on Bald Eagle also.  I usually only fish pannies there though.  Good luck.

Thanks for the info but I am little further north Chisago Lakes area. I heard Green can be pretty good but they are on the small side. I used to fish Bald Eagle and tried there 2 times last year and the fishing was terrible to say the least. My breother in law still goes out on White Bear and he still does very good you might want to try there again.

Doom,you have plenty of good lakes in your backyard for walleyes.funny you never got into them or maybe you did'nt realize they were there,early ice is still your best bet whether fishing local or up north.

I've never fished green without catching walleye, but they have always been small.
You should have no trouble finding them in your area.

I never really got into walleye fishing around here cause I always had the kids along so I went after the fast panfish bite to help keep the kids busy. They love to go after crappies but the wife and them have been asking about the walleye so I better get on the ball. Thanks for the info guys

North and south Center are supposed to be pretty good for walleye action.

I was thinking of takingmy 2 boys on Green so maybe they can catch one. Will look into that also how about Clear I hear it has a fair number of good size eyes????

my brother in law fishes clear alot used to be pretty good he has been getting mostly smaller eyes this summer. I think that lake gets fished hard in the summer not so sure about winter.

The Clear lake by Forest lake is so fished out that you would be lucky to land any fish of any specie over 7 inches. Forest lake is your best bet for Walters in that neck of the woods. If you want to find good walleye fishing in the metro give up on the N.E. and head for Minnetonka. I am talking BIG fish! Get out as early as the ice is safe and fish the edge (I mean the exact edge) of a weedline. Typically 18'. Tick a swimming rapala off the rocks or jig a minnow. Spend the night The fish mayl show up at odd hours until the sun hits your eyes.

Tim told me about this little dandy a couple years ago. You would never imagine that this lake would have any eyes but it does. And the lake is super small so there tough to miss.

Its not to far from my house 2-3 miles so I will be out there this season. I have seen it a bunch of times but never thought about fishing it.

It must have been a walleye rearing pond at some point. You should have no troubles finding them there.

I'm all about helping people out and the exchange of info pertaining to the outdoors. BUT when it compromises a lake and threatens the lake then I think we need to draw a line. I don't want to be the cause or be involved in the ruining of a lake and we know there are many that will do that.

So.... I have edited this topic and removed the lake name. And I stand by my decision.

thanx MNO..... I get a sick feeling in my gut when I start seeing lakes and even exact spots on them posted.... seen too many spots get pounded and ruined by well intended tips tossed around.... gotta be careful.   Fished the Chisago area for years LOTS of good lakes in that area, and even more spots on them.  Get maps, & look where people fish on structure.... doesnt get much more simple... its better than any advise someone could give ya!

The way I look at it is, there is so much good info a site/forum like this, a magazine, radio/tv show can give and share with people without giving specific structure locations.... Im all for steering some one in the right direction as far as what is a good walleye lake, but when dealing with media and a large amount of people, dont you think the right(wrong ) info can kill a small area or even a lake if too many take advantage?  Ive seen it happen.... how many out there are aware of the plight of Sunrise lake up in the Chisago area a few years back....?  To a certain degree people have to find out for themselves some of it dont you think?  Dont get me wrong...I'd be the first person to take a person new to ice fishing, especially kids, to my best spots Ive found from my years of finding good spots (and alot of not so good ones) but just tossing out specific locations so every one and their sisters brother-in-law can see and use isnt in the best interest of others or the resources.  Just my three cents... I know thats opening a can of worms, especially on a forum like this, but I think one should give people more credit, and let some learning and exploring be done... that part of the outdoor experience right?

Here's some good info... a good way to find out some really good spots on lakes without letting hundreds (or more) other people know, is when ya hit bait shops before you go out(the local ones near the lake)... just ask the guys behind the counter... they'll be more than happy to help those that need it or if youre new to a lake when ya spend money there!

I too know how important it is not to give too percise info to ppl who may abuse the spot.When I asked the guy last week if he would give the name of the lake, I was more curious than anything as most of the lakes around the alex area had not even begun to form yet and that is where he said they walked out onto 6 inches.
too early for me soon though very soon!
