I have a had moderate success with grunting.  I called in a fork last year.  What kind of grunting patterns do you use?  I grunt 2-3 times, wait a few minutes, grunt again 2-3 times, then wait again, then repeat it one more time.  After that I wait 1/2 hour and try it again.

How do you grunt?

I'm currently after one big son of a gun near St. Croix Falls with the bow.  I rattled a bit and incorporated grunting with that, which brought Mr. Big Stuff charging out of the woods and looking for a fight (70 or so yds. away).  I was in a shelter belt out in a meadow but couldn't get him to commit.  He swung downwind a bit but...no luck.  I like to use two differently pitched calls when rattling.  When grunting alone, I too blow 2 or 3 times, wait a few minutes, then repeat.  I've had sneaky bastages literally charge ME while rattling and grunting from the ground.  They get plenty pissed off thinking there's competition in the area.
One deal about the big buck was that long, sustained grunts got his attention much more than the short grunts.  He'd really swing his head around with a longer grunt that tapered lower at the very end.
Whatever that's worth!
