New Horizontal Ice jig 1/64oz.

       Came up with this one last night.  I hope to try it this afternoon.  This is the unpainted version.  The painted ones are not cured yet.  I really like the flat head design.  My plan is to cut the head off a crappie minnow and thread the body on like you would a plastic worm.  I will keep you posted with result.  My expectations are high. These should work well with soft plastic tails as well. With the pic it is hard to tell how small these really are.   New name is Daphniminnoe.   Spelled incorrectly on purpose.

How heavy are those jigs? -- OK, Im an idiot, I see the title, 1/64oz.   

-- I had alot of success last year on the river with a jig like that.  I dont remember who made it - but I would usually tip it with a tail of a fat head (then I could use the head with my other jigs.... it worked well for my minnow management).  Anyways, the one thing that was hard, was the smaller walleyes that we were catching on the river, but mostly the smaller perch, would bite, bite, bite, but it was pretty hard to land the fish.
I guess the upside was that the only fish we caught were decent size and we missed all the small ones.

     This is the first set of painted ones.  They are not fully cured yet but I am going to try them anyway.  The one with the gold hook is 1/32 oz.  The ones with the bronze hooks are 1/64oz.  I am getting my stuff together to go out.  Can't wait to see what I forget.  The sun is out so I am going to go out light.  Leaving the shelter at home.

    I got out for a couple of hours today.  Went to Bald Eagle to field test the daphniminnoe.  I used the 1/32 oz.  I am happy to report they work.  The sun was out and not much wind so I skipped the porty and just fished outside.  Ice is drivable  I have not fished this lake for at least ten years.  I drove out by the island.  Stayed away from the crowds.  I was in 30ft.  Dropped the vex and I was on them.  I drilled 2 holes but only used one rod at a time.  They were biting very light.  No interest in minnows.  I switched to the wax worm and then it was on.  All small.  I released everything.  I took some pics until the camera froze up.  After the daphniminnoe I went to an orange eye drop.  That was hot too.  I then tried a side eye ant.  They didn't like this as much.  I could work the crappies up and down but the bites were light.  I used a spring bobber with the daphs, and no bobber with the others.  Being outside the hole would skim over and a float of any kind would have been counter productive.   I was surprised to see all the sunfish  I caught were covered with the black spots.    I don't remember them being that way 10 years ago.   Had a good time and was pleased with the daphs.

Crazy you can come up with a jig, make it, and then catch fish with it all in a weekend.  I like the look of them too. (Now i can add those pictures to the website  )

Did you catch just Crappies and Sunfish, or did you get into any perch?

   Just craps and sunnies.  I shot a vid too.  Had a clip on cam that shot in AVI.  I wanted to post it to the learning to ice fish thread.  I suppose it has to be in mpg or something to post it on youtube.  I used the old jig stick with no reel as a demo for the thread. I Wanted to show that you can fish without fancy gear and still cross their eyes.  The best part was I was on a busy metro lake and did not have a person or ice house within 200 yards of me.  ( I did make sure not to set the hook when there were drive by's).  I will admit that it was  a tough bite.  I also found out I need to change line on a couple of reels before I fish with the General next weekend.  Line twist was bad.  I am starting to think the fly reels might the way to go.

  I'm heading to millelacs in 2 weeks for the jumbo perch/walleye/tulaby run with the kids.  Would love to try them out.  Any chance you could sell me a few of your prototypes?

      dakids,  you tried some stuff out for me last year.  You were nice enough to provide feedback which is all I ask from field testers.  Your pics were appreciated last year.  I am going to work on bumping up the sizes and will have a set of them ready to go for you.  These are a little light for what you will be doing.  I think I can make these up to 1/4oz.  I'm going to send you a couple of different colors as well.  No charge to you.  Just a report would be appreciated. Sort of reminds me of the CJ&S Diamond jigs except I think their eyes are painted on. These eyes look better than the CJ&S ones.

  I made an attempt at larger sizes.  I like the look but I think anything larger than the 3/16oz may have too large a profile for an ice jig.  Let me know what you guys think.  I don't doubt that the 1/4 would work great in the spring and fall but for mid winter it would not be my first choice.  I will send a couple of these off to you Dakids to try on Mille Lacs.  See what you can find out.

- Scott, once again, I think the jigs of different sizes are a good idea.  Would you suggest the larger jigs be tipped with a minnow head for ice fishing - or better with a leech/nightcrawler in the summer?
-- I would think both techniques would work, like I said, I used a tail of the minnow to make the presentation look a little more believable.

LOOKING GOOD!     I bet those would be killer for perch on Mille Lacs (along with others).

   My personal opinion is this daphniminnoe is nose heavy.  Should work well with plastic tails.  When you get up to the 3/8-1/4 oz the profile is much bigger than I would pick for an ice lure.  It should be great for drift jigging or snap jigging.  It will fall nose first with the hook up as long as you are moving.  For straight up and down precision jigging I would prefer the 47s.  This is just theory.  I know the small ones will take the pannies.  Most of the minnow shaped heads on the market are heaviest in the middle.  Does it matter?  We will have to see.

I gave the lures a good workout yesterday.  The perch were very finiky.  We managed to get 20 that were over 9 inches, (biggest was 13 inches) but had to work very hard.  After catching a fish on any lure you had to change to a differant lure in order to get another fish to bite.  I only caught one tulapy were as my friend caught 17 . I found out latter that you really had to shake the heck out of any lure to get them to hit.  I did out fish him on the perch 14 to 6 using your lures.  I think it was you that said the larger jigs would be nose heavy and you were right.  didn't catch a fish on it. Smaller was the key.  Did get a LOT of lookers after pounding them into the mud on the bottem.  The perch all were spitting up bugs.  They were all very fat and well fed.  Took a lot of picture, but with the bitter cold and being a brand new camera that I didn't know how to operate, none of the picture turned out.

Eurolarva worked better than minnoe heads 4 to 1.  I really liked the lead heads on the kahle hooks. They outfished the daphimino. The kahle hook is my favorite hook for winter crappies. These will replace the split shot and plain hook.  Will be taking the kids fishing next weekend for crappies with my new favorite lure. Thanks for letting me test your lures.

possible u limmit out on suns first cuz crops are like 8 inchs sunnys u limmit with 8 inches +
