The season is just about at the halfway point and the walleye bite has been doing pretty well out on the break and the two humps out in front. Now if you are willing to jump around, you can do very well on the walleyes. I have spots in the shallower water from 12 to 17 ft of water that have been putting out some really nice walleyes. Yes, you do have to put them back, but just catching the big fat piggy’s is a great experience. If I could, I would let everyone take one fish over 20 inches, but that is not in my control, unfortunately. There have been a lot of fish caught in the 24 to 26 inch range this year and a few fish in the 28 and 29 inch range coming out of the shallower water.

The big pike are still roaming around, there were 3 more over 38 inches taken this past weekend. That is 8 of them so far this season that have been caught while fishing for walleyes. I would imagine that if you were actually fishing for them, that there would have been a lot more than that caught by now. I never thought that I would say this, but I wish that we could get about 4 inches of snow. As of right now there is not much snow for banking out on the lake, so I am waiting for some snow, as it is time to move over to the second reef. With no snow to bank or even establish a road system, it makes it very, very tuff to make the move until we get some snow out there.

We will have to wait and hope for some snow and I hope it is soon. There is a pretty good bite if you can stay portable. Like I said to start out, the shallow water is doing pretty good, but you must be quite, I call it deer hunting for walleyes. With the water being so clear you can see them come in and often times they are not messing around when they come thru. They are hammering the bait and the fight is on. So if you have never tried fishing in the shallows, it is time to check out. I take great pride in when and where I set up my rental houses during the winter season and it is all about giving you the best shot possible to hook into these big fish that Mille Lacs Lake is know for.

I was talking to a few of the guys this weekend that had taken my advice and fished the shallows and they are now believers in it, as they were able to tie into some really nice fish over 25 inches. Numbers is sometimes not the game on Mille lacs; it is that you will have the best chance of getting into some really fat and healthy fish not to mention that one for the wall, more than anywhere else in the state. That is it for now; I am on my way out the door to go looking for the new spots to set the houses on. I have always fished an area myself first before I ever set down a house.

One more thing, there are some really big tulibees starting to show up out in the muck just off of the second reef and they are just full of bugs that they are digging up, so I would expect that the perch will not be far behind
