Well, I know that I am not the only one going  because, I have not seen this many hunters out since opening weekend.  Yesterday morning I literally had to go to 4 different WMA, WPA's before I found one without at least one truck on it.  A few of the bigger WPA's had two groups on them.   Heard very little shooting yesterday morning for all the hunters.
Friend was muzzle loader hunting yesterday morning, hunting a large WPA.  He was in position before first light and enjoyed the sunrise.  About 7:30 he heard the first rooster cackle and for the next hour he watched birds flying to an area, he could see some roosting in trees and others just dropping into the general area.  He thinks it must be a place they sun themselves.  When they started to leave, a few birds flew over to the agricultural edges, a few flew to some willow cover.  The majority flew out to the edge of the cattails near open water, some as close as ten feet away, he could see them running on the ice through his binocs.  There was no way in the world anybody was going to get close to those birds without taking a bath.  I won't even tell you how many birds he estimated he saw.
I know the areas I have been hunting, there is a regular path wore down around the cattails and even in a few yards before it starts to get wet.  Dog can get out in to it, but you hear him breaking ice not to far out.  So come on single digit nights for a week or so.  Then a nice dusting of snow.  There will still be some soft spots to break through, but it wouldn't be hunting inthe cats if you didn't break through at least once, just hope its not to deep, that can make for a long walk back to the truck.  Last few trips for me have been very lean, picked up one last night and one last wednesday.    Missed one tonight, long shot, he was moving at mach one with the wind.  I am thinking a road trip may be in the future plans, down to the Pipestone area maybe.Â
