pheasantman,
I was just in NW Missouri this past weekend checking out a new lease and the birds were really in the air.   All day noise.   Some small flocks and some huge flocks.   Good luck, and let me know how it turns out.
Shoot straight and give'em the shaft!

I am in north central mo for grad schoo, while it has just gotten colder this past two days, there is no snow on the ground. Also I have seen larger and larger flocks of snows flying over every other day, so it should be a good trip. Hopefully I can get away from the books this weekend  :fudd:and bag a few birds.

P21,

Might be a little early unless your heading to the southern part of the state, did you book a trip? if so who? Curious, spent alot of years  around the S.C. area when this hunt 1st started, today the area is saturated with guides and outfitters, some of the best hunts can be found 15-20 miles away from the refuge unless the birds get a strong  southeast tailwind and keep on truckin northwest which can happen, one year we followed'em from S.C. missouri to the SoDak border whne they hit the snow pak and frozen lakes, that night they headed south again!

This is what  the "wad" looked like~

If you drive fast its about 30 minutes from the squaw creek refuge, major stagging area as the birds migrate north, however I'm told the refuge lake is still frozen (last week),ifs that the case they might take you guyz further west, there is a huge power plant on the missouri river that keeps the water open for the birds to roost.

Goodluck, take pics and bring some chest wadders if ya have them,it'll be muddy~

Hunting Update

There was a change in plans I ended up getting sick   and end up not going but the other guys went.  And on sunday when they arrived there were a ton of birds in the area they are the bird population was 12,000 to 15,000 birds in the area.  A storm came in sunday night and messed up hunting on monday there were birds around but wouldnt come in they ended up only shooting 1 bird.  They are hoping today will be better as the weather is suppose to be nice.

Thanx for the update,15k birds is called a flock or "wad" of geese, when things really get rolling the count is in the 100's of thousands and sometimes over a million on the refuge.

Another few weeks and it will be game on,me still thinks we'll see the migration further west this year because of the deep snow pack thru the normal migration route.Time will tell I guess.

Well I am glad I ended up getting sick .  The trip for my buddys was pretty much a waste of time they were there too early and they ended up shooting 7 snow geese in the 3 days they hunted.  The guides said all the juvi birds were still in arkansaw.  there were some adults around (50,000) but they were way to smart and would not decoy or come into range.  They said it will probably be another week or 2 before all the juvis start coming into missouri

Snows are finicky like that when it comes to the snow pack and ice right?
Take a kid hunting and fishing... It'll be the best thing for generations to come.

They can be finicky unless they really want in,a good spread along with a good caller or two and get lucky enough to be in their flight path is all the ingredience you need for a tornado~
Snow pack and ice just slows the migration, food and water will keep them on the move.

The tornado~
