;D HEY BAM! IT  ALL DEPENDS ON THE POCKET BOOK! to start out with you need a good reliable auger , and a fair shelter for an occasional fisherman! tackel and rods, it a matter of what you fish for and how offten you fish as to how much ya want to spend. if your not sure if your going to stay with it most of the fishing gear you probably have already in summer supplys. they work all year around.

                         GOOD LUCK !

I got into ice fishing by buying an ice fishing rod and a hand auger.  Picked up a cheap portable shack a few years ago, it's not pretty but it works.  The hand auger was a pain in the rear to cut holes with, (if you decide to go with a hand auger DO NOT buy the 8" like I did.  It gets pretty tiring cutting holes through 2 feet of ice get a 6" or smaller.

I saw at Menards the other day they had ice fishing kits preassemlbed along with portable ice shacks.  I'd never heard of the brand they were selling before, but it did include everything you need to start out fishing the hard water.  The price was pretty reasonable as I remember.

start out with 2 or 3 rod and reel combos...  put 2 pound test on one for pannies, 3or 4 on another as general purpose and 6-8 on the 3rd for eyes or bigger fish. you can get some good ones at fleet farm for about 20-25$ each. or get a few good rods and 4 or 5 reels with diferent pound test on them to switch out.  get a portablehouse... can always find used ones on this or other boards... or craigslist.  if money is a problem wait on the flasher and UW camera... I'd get flasher first then camera.
you'll need a heater for your portable, just a cheap little tackle box, don't forget lantren for night fishing...  as far as tackle goes, get a mix of little ice jigs, glow banana jigs, flu-flus, maybe a buckshot rattler, you can pick those up as you go.  just buy 3 or 4 everytime you get bait on a trip like I do.  BUT ALWAYS GET TWO OF EVERYTHING WHEN YOU BUY YOUR HOOKS!  for two reasons, you'll lose one and if they are biting on it, you'll want to replace it... or your buddy will be watching you catch fish with one and he'll get jealous... you think they are expensive in the bait shop...you'd be surprised what they go for out on the lake.  ;D and i only use ice buster bobbers... thy are the best.
get a used auger on one of these sites... gas if you can but hand augers are fine to start out with.  depth finder if you are not getting a flasher right away...  god I could go on forever... I guess I have a lot of junk.
anyone else care to add?

I think you guys have it all wrong.

There are a few key ingredients to a great ice fishihng trip:

1: One warm Rental Shack - Sleeper

2: 4 or 5 buddies

3: 4 or 5 cases of beer

4: A deck of cards

5: A football

6: Lots of food

7: And some minnows.....

Did I miss anything??
