We made 4 Trips to URL during January and February.  All of our trips were on the north side out of Hillman's.  The results were not spectacular but they were positive.  We basically fished from Thursday p.m. until Saturday morning during each of the trips.  We were fishing out of a wheel house and fished mostly on the transition line.  We made one trip out to the mud in 14 ft. of water but the other three trips were in 13 - 13 1/2 ft.  There were many acres of unexplored territory this year.  It was difficult if not impossible for the outfitters to plow roads out past 4 miles because of the snow/slush on the lake.  Ice thickness would vary quite a bit with all the snow cover which made it dangerous for the plows to venture out to their normal areas.  The best bite was early morning and right before dark.  All low-light conditions. There was basically no night bite.  Some trips the deadstick was the hot ticket with a colored hook/bead  or a demon with a tail-hooked minnow.  However, most of the trips the rattling flyer in the red color produced the most fish.  If you were dilligent and fished hard you had results.  Every trip resulted in enough fish for a meal on the ice (two people) and fish brought home.  Every trip but one resulted in a limit brought home with the exception of one trip when we brought home 5 fish.  The vast majority of fish we caught were under the slot - 15 -16 1/2 inches.  Not too many fish over 20 inches were caught.  Our thanks to the Waskish Minnow Station for all their help.
I fish not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant - and not nearly as much fun.? Robert Traver "Anatomy of a Fisherman"
